In Search of a Path
The foreign policy of small states is an often neglected topic, which is particularly the case when it comes to Suriname. How did the young Republic deal with its dependency on the Netherlands for development aid after 1975? Was Paramaribo following a certain foreign policy strategy or did it merely react towards internal and external events? What were the decision making processes in defining the foreign policy course and who was involved in these processes? And why was a proposal discussed to hand back the right of an independent foreign and defence policy to a Dutch Commonwealth government in the early 1990s? These questions are examined here in depth, in the first comprehensive analysis of Suriname’s foreign policy from 1975 to 1991. In today’s Europe, migrant domestic workers are indispensable in supporting many households which, without their employment, would lack sufficient domestic and care labour. Black Girls collects and explores the stories of some of the first among these workers. Maar witteboordencriminaliteit, zien we dát als misdaad? In Criminaliteit voor ons soort mensen staat het leven van advocaat Evert Hingst centraal. In 2005 werd hij in de Amsterdamse Beethovenbuurt vermoord, daarna werd hij het symbool voor ondermijning, de vermenging van nette beroepen (advocaten, notarissen) met de georganiseerde misdaad. Maar verder is er nauwelijks iets over hem bekend. Bregje Bleeker schreef een spannend verhaal over haar zoektocht naar Everts handel en wandel en de explosieve groei van de witteboordencriminaliteit. Ze legt de oorsprong van de hedendaagse ondermijning bloot én de gebrekkige aandacht ervoor. Het resultaat is een kritische reflectie op de manier waarop we naar (witteboorden)criminaliteit kijken. Ze baseerde haar verhaal op vele interviews met topcriminelen zoals Mink Kok, advocaten, wetenschappers en recherche én op haar eerdere persoonlijke ervaringen met het criminele milieu waarin Hingst rondliep. En passant lost ze de moord op hem op.
