Mefisto

  • Categories: Art

The exquisite still lifes of Alberto Iriarte (1920-1993), known as Mefisto, have remained Colombia's best kept artistic secret of the 20th century, despite having been exhibited in Paris, Barranquilla, and Bogotá. Nonetheless, Colombian art history cannot fail to honor Mefisto as one of its most influential painters. This book displays the complete selection of his strange and beautiful still life paintings, collected together for the first time.

Fanny Sanín: The Concrete Language of Color and Structure

  • Categories: Art

Colombian-born painter Fanny Sanín (born 1938) has dedicated a long, prolific career to the exploration of geometric abstraction; her oeuvre is characterized by large-scale canvases depicting hard-edge geometric compositions in vibrant color configurations. Over the past five decades, Sanín has exhibited widely, mainly in Latin America and the United States (where she has lived since the 1970s, in New York), positioning herself as one of Latin America's most extraordinary colorists. This publication is a long-overdue comprehensive monograph on this pioneering painter. Featuring contributions from prominent academics and curators such as Beverly Adams, Jay Oles and Edward J. Sullivan, the book contextualizes Sanín's work within international geometric abstraction and offers a glimpse into the artist's rigorous working process. It surveys her entire career, from her energetic abstractions of the 1960s through the evolution and continual refinement of her ongoing commitment to concrete abstraction.

Grabados antiguos de la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Colección Eduardo Ospina, S.J.

Featuring vivid photographs from the collection of antique engravings at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia, this work illustrates the history of art from the Italian Renaissance through the 19th century. The works of Andrea Mantegna, Rogier van der Weyden, and Hans Memling are represented as are the spectacular works of Jacques-Lois David, Eugene Delacroix, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, and Jean Francois Millet—all of which evoke an appreciation for the high-quality engravings made in European workshops. As a complement to the illustrations, biographical information about these artists is also included. Incluyendo fotografías vivas de la colección de estampas antigu...
