Tomos lives with his mother, and sometimes her boyfriend. He longs to return to another place, a place he thinks of as home, and the people who lived with him there. And for Cwtch, who he had to leave behind, too. He knows that there are some things he cannot talk about - except to Cwtch - and then, just before Christmas, the difficult things come to a head. There are men outside who want to come in, and his mum has said not to answer the door. From behind his chair, Tomos waits, trying to make himself small and quiet. He doesn't think it's Santa Claus this time. When the men break in, Tomos's world is turned on its head and the adults around him must fight to make it right again.

Political Cleavages and Social Inequalities

The empirical starting point for anyone who wants to understand political cleavages in the democratic world, based on a unique dataset covering fifty countries since WWII. Who votes for whom and why? Why has growing inequality in many parts of the world not led to renewed class-based conflicts, seeming instead to have come with the emergence of new divides over identity and integration? News analysts, scholars, and citizens interested in exploring those questions inevitably lack relevant data, in particular the kinds of data that establish historical and international context. Political Cleavages and Social Inequalities provides the missing empirical background, collecting and examining a tr...

Psychological Significance and Difference Between Tools Use by Humans and Animals

This book represents the very first, so far unpublished, translation of Piotr Galperin’s (1902-1988) dissertation, defended in 1938 during his employment in the All-Ukrainian Psycho-Neurological Academy (AUPA) in Kharkiv, Ukraine. In his candidate dissertation Galperin examined the differences in tool use between humans and animals and argued that there was a fundamental difference between tools developed and used by humans and the auxiliary means used by animals. Galperin showed that human use of tools totally differs from the way tools are utilised by animals as ‘an extension’ of their limbs. He suggested that tools created and used by humans encapsulate cultural and historical exper...

Why the Gospel of Thomas Matters

Why the Gospel of Thomas Matters

By setting selected sayings from the Gospel of Thomas alongside the disciple's own words from the Fourth Gospel, this book challenges the myth of 'doubting Thomas', arguing that 'incertainty' is an essential element of any authentic faith experience. In an age of increasing anti-semitism and religious intolerance, it also affirms the importance of the Gospel of Thomas in recovering the essential Jewishness of Jesus. Far from undermining the Christian tradition of the Church and its canonical scriptures, this book shows how the Gospel of Thomas complements both, inviting the reader to reconsider the healthy significance of the Apostle of the Enquiring Mind.
