Al-Kashi's Miftah al-Hisab, Volume II: Geometry

Jamshīd al-Kāshī’s Miftāḥ al-Ḥisab (Key to Arithmetic) was largely unknown to researchers until the mid-20th century, and has not been translated to English until now. This is the second book in a multi-volume set that finally brings al-Kāshī’s groundbreaking textbook to English audiences in its entirety. As soon as it was studied by modern researchers, it changed some false assumptions about the history of certain topics in mathematics. Written as a textbook for students of mathematics, astronomy, accounting, engineering, and architecture, Miftah covers a wide range of topics in arithmetic, geometry, and algebra. By sharing al-Kāshī’s most comprehensive work with a wider a...

Algebra and Coding Theory

This volume contains the proceedings of the Virtual Conference on Noncommutative Rings and their Applications VII, in honor of Tariq Rizvi, held from July 5–7, 2021, and the Virtual Conference on Quadratic Forms, Rings and Codes, held on July 8, 2021, both of which were hosted by the Université d'Artois, Lens, France. The articles cover topics in commutative and noncommutative algebra and applications to coding theory. In some papers, applications of Frobenius rings, the skew group rings, and iterated Ore extensions to coding theory are discussed. Other papers discuss classical topics, such as Utumi rings, Baer rings, nil and nilpotent algebras, and Brauer groups. Still other articles are devoted to various aspects of the elementwise study for rings and modules. Lastly, this volume includes papers dealing with questions in homological algebra and lattice theory. The articles in this volume show the vivacity of the research of noncommutative rings and its influence on other subjects.

Jamshīd al-Kāshī’s Miftāḥ al-Ḥisab (Key to Arithmetic) was largely unknown to researchers until the mid-20th century, and has not been translated to English until now. These three volumes finally bring al-Kāshī’s groundbreaking textbook to English audiences in its entirety. As soon as it was studied by modern researchers, Miftah changed some false assumptions about the history of certain topics in mathematics. Written as a textbook for students of mathematics, astronomy, accounting, engineering, and architecture, Miftah covers a wide range of topics in arithmetic, geometry, and algebra. By sharing al-Kāshī’s most comprehensive work with a wider audience, this book will help establish a more complete history of mathematics, and extend al-Kāshī’s influence into the 21st century and beyond. Researchers and students of the history of mathematics will find this set indispensable in filling in a frequently overlooked time period and region. These volumes will also provide anybody interested in the history of Islamic culture with an insightful look at one of the mathematical world’s most neglected figures.

This book presents an account of selected topics from key mathematical works of medieval Islam, based on the Arabic texts themselves. Many of these works had a great influence on mathematics in Western Europe. Topics covered in the first edition include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and numerical approximation; this second edition adds number theory and combinatorics. Additionally, the author has included selections from the western regions of medieval Islam—both North Africa and Spain. The author puts the works into their historical context and includes numerous examples of how mathematics interacted with Islamic society.
