Myths on the Margins of Homer
Even though there is agreement on the existence of an Imperial commentary on Homer, going under the name Mythographus Homericus, a large-scale study of this work has been lacking. The objective of this collective volume is to fill this blank. The authors represent diverse opinions, a consequence of the complex nature of the textual tradition but also of the difficulty of defining the nature of this mythographic work itself. This volume offers a study of Mythographus Homericus from different perspectives: the place of the work in the history of scholarship, the state of the text, which has been transmitted by scholia and papyri, its readership, its place in mythography and in Homeric scholarship, its intertextual relationship to other mythographic works or scholiastic corpora and its contribution to the study of myth from a typological perspective.

Vergimus in senium
Basierend auf neueren Arbeiten zu künstlerischen Alterswerken, die den Diskurscharakter des Alterswerkbegriffes betonen, zeigt diese Studie, wie der antike Dichter Statius sein zweites Epos, die Achilleis, vor dem Hintergrund vorhandener Ideen zur künstlerischen Produktion im Alter, entwirft. Er erschafft dazu in seinen parallel erscheinenden Gelegenheitsgedichten, den Silven, das Bild eines alternden Dichters und konzeptioniert die Achilleis als komplementäres Nachfolgewerk zur Thebais, das in seiner Gestaltung auf einen alternden Dichter schließen lässt. Das wirkliche Alter des Statius oder seine tatsächliche physische Konstitution werden dabei nicht in den Blick genommen. Vielmehr wird gezeigt, wie Statius in expliziter Form sich als Alternder dem Publikum in den Silven präsentiert und so eine Rezeptionshaltung für die Lektüre der Achilleis erzeugt. So können entsprechende Textsignale auf der Mikro- und der Makroebene im Epos vom Publikum als Belege für einen alternden Dichter gelesen werden.
Sic notus Achilles?
In Statius' Achilleis bewegt sich der namensgebende Held des Werkes, der den antiken und modernen Leser:innen aus Homers Ilias als der Krieger schlechthin bekannt ist, in unkriegerischen Situationen: Bevor er nach Troja aufbricht, versteckt ihn seine Mutter als Mädchen verkleidet auf der Insel Skyros, um ihn vor dem Krieg zu bewahren. Auch diese Ereignisse waren bekannt, sie wurden allerdings in nichtepischen Gattungen wie der Bukolik, Tragödie und dem Liebes-Lehrgedicht dargestellt. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, zu zeigen, mit welchen Mitteln die Erzählung in Statius Achilleis im Vergleich zu diesen Prätexten neu akzentuiert wird, Achill heroischer und männlicher wirken kann und damit seine Bestimmung zum Helden deutlich wird. Die Arbeit bietet eine Besprechung aller zentralen Stellen der Achilleis.

This compendium (4 vols.) studies the continuity, flexibility, and variation of structural elements in epic narratives. It provides an overview of the structural patterns of epic poetry by means of a standardized, stringent terminology. Both diachronic developments and changes within individual epics are scrutinized in order to provide a comprehensive structural approach and a key to intra- and intertextual characteristics of ancient epic poetry.
