Standard surveys of 20th century visual art imply that there is a continuity between, say, Rembrandt and Koons, between Caravaggio and Hirst. Even the sharp critics of artists who dominate the contemporary art scene, such as Warhol, Hirst, Ai Weiwei and countless others, imply such a continuity. They are all wrong. There is no such continuity, or, more precisely, it is only very weak, at best. This volume presents fifteen musicological perspectives on the creativity of women composers and the question of 'femininity' in Southeastern-European musical cultures from 1918 on. Worlding a Peripheral Literature

Bringing together the analyses of the literary world-system, translation studies, and the research of European cultural nationalism, this book contests the view that texts can be attributed global importance irrespective of their origin, language, and position in the international book market. Focusing on Slovenian literature, almost unknown to world literature studies, this book addresses world literature’s canonical function in the nineteenth-century process of establishing European letters as national literatures. Aware of their dependence on imperial powers, (semi)peripheral national movements sought international recognition through, among other things, the newly invented figure of the national poet. Writers central to dependent national communities were canonized to represent their respective cultures to the norm-giving Other – the emerging world literary canon and its aesthetic ideology. Hence, national literatures asserted their linguo-cultural individuality through the process of worlding; that is, by their positioning in the international literary world informed by the supposed universality of the aesthetic.

How can we define the referential systems by which music is determined and through which music gets its own sense and meaning? What is the relation between these systems? Such questions are of particular weight in relation to current music practices, characterized by a great many of analytical procedures and hermeneutical views. The authors allocate the place of music to the field of aesthetic autonomy or describe its specific sign system(s). For more than 1,300 years Slovenes had lived in Eastern Europe without having a separate Slovene state, but in December of 1990, they voted for independence, or, put more appropriately, for "disassociation" from Yugoslavia. "Music cultures in sounds, words and images", edited by Antonio Baldassarre and Tatjana Markovic, is dedicated to the 60th birthday of the Croatian-American musicologist Zdravko Blažekovic (b. 1956, Zagreb). After his studies of musicology and first working experiences in Zagreb, Blažekovic moved to New York City, where he is since 1996 the executive editor of the RILM - Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale, and since 1998 director of the RCMI - Research Center for Music Iconography as well as editor of one of the leading journals for music iconography, "Music in Art", in the framework of the Barry S. Brook Center for Music Reserach and Documentation at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. In view of Blažekovic's very broad multidisciplinary interests, including historical musicology, music iconography, organology, archeology, lexicography and databases, this book contains 38 studies in six languages (English, German, Italian, Serbian, Croatian, Chinese) organized in six chapters: Sounds of nations, Words on musics, Performance of musical cultures, Images on musics, Organology, and Classifying data on music.
