Die Beiträge des Bandes thematisieren den Zusammenhang von Medien, Demokratie und Bildung im Dreischritt „Information” als Basis politischer Öffentlichkeit, „Partizipation” als anzustrebende demokratische Praxis sowie „Reflexion” auf die grundlegenden Wertvoraussetzungen gelingender gesellschaftlicher Organisation die digitale Kommunikation. Sie behandeln diesen Dreischritt dabei unter ethischen sowie Bildungsgesichtspunkten und formulieren Folgerungen für Bildungsdiskurse in demokratischen Gesellschaften.
Responsibility and Resistance
The volume deals with the normative challenges and the ethical questions imposed by, and through, the developments and changes in everyday life, culture and society in the context of media change. It is thus concerned with the questions of whether and how the central concept of (enlightened) ethics must evolve under these premises – or in other words: what form do ethics take in mediatized societies? In order to address this question and to stimulate and initiate a debate, the authors focus on two concepts: responsibility and resistance. Their contributions try to shed light not only on the empirical shreds of evidence of change in mediatized societies, but also on the normative challenges and ethical possibilities of these developments.

Mit der vor seinem unerwarteten Tod fast druckfertigen Gesamtschau deutscher Mediengeschichte und Medienvergessenheit legt Dietrich Kerlen ein Werk vor, das neben der Kulturhistorie auch reiches Material für Medienwissenschaft, Medienökonomie, Medienpädagogik und Medienethik bietet. Seine Thesen sind stets klar, mit Bodenhaftung und unmissverständlich formuliert, zum Teil pointiert, aber immer reich an Verweisen auf einen breiten Bildungshorizont. Matthias Rath und Gudrun Marci-Boehncke, beide Kollegen Dietrich Kerlens in seinen letzten Projekten, haben den Text gesichtet und zum Druck bereitet, ohne die Intention zu verändern und die Schärfe seiner Argumentationen zu glätten.
Ethik der mediatisierten Welt
Der Band erweitert die Medienethik über Medieninhalte und Medienpraxis hinaus zur „Ethik der mediatisierten Welt“. Er fußt dabei einerseits auf der Einsicht in die grundsätzliche Medialität des Menschen sowie die daraus folgende Prägung seiner gesellschaftlichen Realität und überbrückt andererseits die Kluft zwischen normativer Ethik und deskriptiven Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaften. Eine Ethik der mediatisierten Welt muss dabei nicht nur die eigenen philosophischen Wurzeln bedenken, sondern die medienethischen Grundbegriffe auch interdisziplinär beherrschen. Sie wird daher als integrative Disziplin zwischen Philosophie und Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaften verstanden.
