Cildo: Studies, spaces, time

  • Categories: Art

This book presents Cildo's work, focusing on his "studies". A great part of his most relevant works are shown here not only through photos of them in exhibitions, but also through Cildo's drawings and sketches, which allow us to see his processes of creation. In here, there are well-known installations such as Eureka / Blindhotland, Malhas da Liberdade, La Bruja and Desvio para o Vermelho, Através. There are also some of his less known works, never before gathered in a book. Another highlight of the book is a selection of 12 fundamental texts about Cildo's work, written by critics from all over the world, throughout his career, from his first exhibition in 1969 to 2017.

For the first time outside of Brazil, 2G presents the widest selection of the work of this great architect, considered to be the key figure of the architecture created in the city of São Paulo in the 1960s and 1970s. João Vilanova Artigas’s work, which spans five decades in all, is prolific and extensive. Unfortunately, much of this work is in a precarious state of preservation today. As a result, the most expressive group of works that are well - or reasonably well - preserved consists of single-family houses and apartment buildings. These have been chosen according to criteria of aesthetic and discursive importance, mainly from the so-called ‘brutalist’ phase, which is without doubt the architect’s most personal and radical period. Oustanding among his buildings is that for the Faculty of Architecture and Planning of the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP, 1961-1968), João Vilanova Artigas’s undoubted masterpiece. All the photographs that document the buildings have been specially taken for 2G by Nelson Kon, and various project designs have also been redrawn.

Conceived as an imaginary conversation with the artist on the 100th anniversary of his birth, this book pays homage to the revolutionary potential of Beuys' art and thought Is art the only truly revolutionary force? Is the future a category of art? Are these even the questions we need to be asking? One hundred years after the birth of Joseph Beuys, the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia is rearticulating questions fundamental to his art and thought. This publication provides an overview of the extensive program of Beuys 2021: 100 Years of Joseph Beuys--including exhibitions, lectures and performances--and examines what it is that makes this artist so controversial and still so very topical. It explores his complex oeuvre, pays homage to his international impact and rediscovers the revolutionary potential of his thought. A wide range of contributors from many different spheres, generations and cultures enter into a richly associative dialogue with his aphorisms. Together they explore the genesis and viability of Beuys' vision of a future based on the principles of art.

The Color of a Flea's Eye

Taryn Simon?s 'The Color of a Flea?s Eye' presents a history of the New York Public Library?s Picture Collection?a legendary trove of more than one million prints, photographs, postcards, posters and images from disused books and periodicals. Since its inception in 1915, the Picture Collection has been a vital resource for writers, historians, artists, filmmakers, fashion designers and advertising agencies.0In her work 'The Picture Collection' (2012-20), Simon (born 1975) highlighted the impulse to organize visual information, and pointed to the invisible hands behind seemingly neutral systems of image gathering. Each of Simon?s photographs is made up of an array of images selected from a gi...

Brazil Imagined

The first comprehensive cultural history of Brazil to be written in English, Brazil Imagined: 1500 to the Present captures the role of the artistic imaginary in shaping Brazil's national identity. Analyzing representations of Brazil throughout the world, this ambitious survey demonstrates the ways in which life in one of the world's largest nations has been conceived and revised in visual arts, literature, film, and a variety of other media. Beginning with the first explorations of Brazil by the Portuguese, Darlene J. Sadlier incorporates extensive source material, including paintings, historiographies, letters, poetry, novels, architecture, and mass media to trace the nation's shifting sense of its own history. Topics include the oscillating themes of Edenic and cannibal encounters, Dutch representations of Brazil, regal constructs, the literary imaginary, Modernist utopias, "good neighbor" protocols, and filmmakers' revolutionary and dystopian images of Brazil. A magnificent panoramic study of race, imperialism, natural resources, and other themes in the Brazilian experience, this landmark work is a boon to the field.

You Got to Burn to Shine

The originator of Spoken Word and performance poetry, John Giorno is one of the most influential figures in the world of contemporary performance. You Got to Burn to Shine, his first book in many years, collects intensely rhythmic, sexual and philosophical poetry spanning two decades. Here, too, are deeply personal memoirs, including the story of his friendship with Andy Warhol (Giorno had an occasionally sexual relationship with Warhol, met his mother, and starred in Warhol's first film, Sleep); an anonymous sexual encounter with Keith Haring, an aspiring painter who recognized Giorno in a subway station toilet; and notes toward a Buddhist understanding of death in the age of AIDS.
