This ambitious study of all proper names in the Chanson de Roland is based for the first time on a systematic survey of the whole geographical and historical literature from antiquity to after 1100 for the Geographica, and on working through (almost) the entire documentary tradition of France and its neighbouring regions from 778 to the early 12th century for the personal names. Diese ambitionierte Untersuchung aller Eigennamen des Rolandsliedes stützt sich für die Geographica auf eine systematische Erfassung der einschlägigen Literatur von der Antike bis nach 1100, für die Namen der Hauptpersonen (Marsilie, Baligant, Ganelon, Turpin, Naimes, Olivier, Roland, Karl) auf eine Durcharbeitung (nahezu) der gesamten urkundlichen Überlieferung Frankreichs und seiner Nachbarregionen von 778 bis ins frühe 12. This is the third of four volumes which trace the history of the later Crusades and papal relations with the Levant from the accession of Innocent III (in 1198) to the reign of Pius V and the battle of Lepanto (1566-1571). From the mid-fourteenth century to the conclusion of his work, the author has drawn heavily upon unpublished materials, collected in the course of more than twenty "palaeographical journeys" to the Archivio Segreto Vaticano and the Archivi di Stato in Venice, Mantua, Modena, Milan, Siena, Florence, and the Archives of the Order of the Hospitallers at Malta.
