This grammar of Scots Gaelic, first published in 1896, is based on the earlier work of the Rev. Alexander Stewart, which was one of the first grammars written on the language. Contents include: Pronunciation and orthography Parts of speech Derivation and composition Syntax Current estimates for the number of Scots Gaelic speakers today suggest that it is spoken by between 50,000 to 60,000 individuals primarily in the north of Scotland and in the Western Isles (e.g. Skye, Lewis, Harris). Once the third most spoken language in Canada, after English and French, Scots Gaelic is still spoken in Atlantic Canada on Cape Breton Island by 500-1000 people. Today it is seriously endangered and there are few fluent speakers.
