Coal Structure deals with the structure, mineral and organic components, and the physical and chemical properties of coal. The book is composed of papers that present a detailed and coherent description of both the physical and chemical structure of coal and the effect of coal structural features on coal processing. The contributions in the text discuss such topics as coal macerals, coal porosity, aromaticity, functional groups and heteroatoms in coal, polymer structure of coal, and mineral matter in coal. Engineers, researchers, scientists, and management personnel who are directly involved in the study and processing of coal will find the book a well-rounded reference source.

Spectrometry of Fuels

Fuels represent an important aspect of world economy. The study of the chemical properties and compositions of fuels is necessary to provide a better understanding of their reactions, and, possibly, to promote their improved commercial utilization. Spectrometry comprises a valuable group of tools and techniques for the study of fuels and their derivatives. Some of the undesirable by-products from fuels-specifically, pollutants-provide the spectroscopist with an additional vast area for the application of his tools. The fight against pollution of all kinds has spawned one of our most rapidly growing industries. It thus seems pertinent to devote a book to the spectrometric investiga tion of fu...

Carbon-13 NMR Spectroscopy

Carbon-13 NMR Spectroscopy focuses on the potential of 13C techniques and the practical difficulties associated with the detection of 13C NMR absorption. This monograph includes a descriptive presentation of 13C shielding results that has been adopted with emphasis on the structural and stereochemical aspects. Organized into four parts encompassing 11 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the characteristics of the NMR signals derived from compounds containing 13C nuclei in natural abundance that are inherently much weaker than those exhibited by protons. This monograph then compares the primary characteristics of 13C NMR with the more familiar proton methods. Other chapters consider the 13C spectra of pyridine, pyridazine, pyrimidine, pyrazine, s-triazine, and s-tetrazine. The final chapter deals with the effects of solute–solvent interactions on the shieldings of other nuclei. This monograph is intended for organic chemists, graduate students, and researchers in various branches of chemistry with an interest in 13C NMR methods as another approach to chemical problems.

Pyridine and Its Derivatives, Volume 14, Part 1 Supplement

The Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds, since its inception, has been recognized as a cornerstone of heterocyclic chemistry. Each volume attempts to discuss all aspects – properties, synthesis, reactions, physiological and industrial significance – of a specific ring system. To keep the series up-to-date, supplementary volumes covering the recent literature on each individual ring system have been published. Many ring systems (such as pyridines and oxazoles) are treated in distinct books, each consisting of separate volumes or parts dealing with different individual topics. With all authors are recognized authorities, the Chemistry of Heterocyclic Chemistry is considered worldwide as the indispensable resource for organic, bioorganic, and medicinal chemists.

Magnetic Resonance

This volume contains the lectures presented at an Advanced Study Institute on "Magnetic Resonance Techniques in Fossil Energy Problems," which was held at the village of Maleme, Crete, in July of 1983. As of this writing, a different popular attitude prevails from that when the ASI was proposed as far as how critical the world energy picture is. In the popular press, a panglossian attitude (the "petroleum glut" of the 80's) has replaced the jeremiads of the 70's ( a catastrophic "energy crisis"). Yet, there are certain important constants: (a) for the foreseeable future, fossil energy sources (petroleum, coal, oil shale, etc. ) will continue to be of paramount importance; and (b) science and...

Catalysis

There is an increasing challenge for chemical industry and research institutions to find cost-efficient and environmentally sound methods of converting natural resources into fuels chemicals and energy. Catalysts are essential to these processes and the Catalysis Specialist Periodical Report series serves to highlight major developments in this area. This series provides systematic and detailed reviews of topics of interest to scientists and engineers in the catalysis field. The coverage includes all major areas of heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis and also specific applications of catalysis such as NOx control kinetics and experimental techniques such as microcalorimetry. Each chapter...
