The Brightest Stars

The Brightest Stars

No part of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram shows a more pronounced diversity of stellar types than the upper part, which contains the most luminous stars. Can one visualize a larger difference than between a luminous, young and extremely hot Of star, and a cool, evolved pulsating giant of the Mira type, or an S-type supergiant, or - again at the other side of the diagram - the compact nucleus of a planetary nebula? But there is order and unity in this apparent disorder! Virtually all types of bright stars are evolutionally related, in one way or the other. Evolution links bright stars. In many cases the evolution is speeded up by, or at least intimately related to various signs of stellar instability. Bright stars lose mass, either continuously or in dramatic sudden events, they vibrate or pulsate - and with these tenuous, gigantic objects this often happens in a most bizarre fashion. Sometimes the evolution goes so fast that fundamental changes are observable in the time span of a human's life - several of such cases have now been identified.

Late Stages of Stellar Evolution

lAD Symposium No. 66 was held in Warsaw from September 10th to September 12th 1973, in connection with the Extraordinary General Assembly of the lAD. It was arranged by lAD Symposium No. 35 and the Scientific Organising Committee con sisted of A. G. Massevitch (Chairman), A. V. Tutukov (Secretary), H. M. van Horn, N. Dallaporta, J. P. Ostriker, B. Paczynski, G. Ruben, E. Schatzman, R. J. Tayler and A. Weigert. This volume contains the full texts of all of the invited papers presented at the Symposium, apart from that delivered by R. P. Kraft, which is published in abstract because it is appearing in full elsewhere. In addition the short communications given at the Symposium are published in ...

Topics in Stereochemistry

This seminal series, first edited by Ernest Eliel, responsible for some of the major advances in stereochemistry and the winner of the ACS Priestley Medal in 1996, provides coverage of the major developments of the field of stereochemistry. The scope of this series is broadly defined to encompass all fields of chemical and biological sciences that are founded on molecular and supramolecular interactions. Insofar as chemical, physical, and biological properties are determined by molecular shape and structure, the importance of stereochemistry is fundamental to and consequential for all natural sciences. Topics in Stereochemistry serves as a multidisciplinary series that enriches all of chemis...

Stellar Physics

"Stellar Physics" is a rather unique book in the growing literature on star formation and evolution. Not only does the author, a leading expert in the field, give a very thorough description of the current knowledge about stellar physics, but he handles with equal care the many problems that this field of research still faces. A bibliography with well over 650 entries makes this book an unparalleled source of references. "Stellar Evolution and Stability" is the second volume and can be read, as can the first volume, as a largely independent work. It traces in great detail the evolution of the protostar towards the main sequence and beyond this to the last stage of stellar evolution, with the corresponding vast range from white dwarfs to the mighty supernovae explosions and blackhole formation. The book concludes with special chapters on the dynamical, thermal and pulsing stability of stars.

Surgery for Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Introduction 'Bocca della Verità' or 'Mouth of Truth' is the logo of the Unit for the Study and Therapy of Sleep Respiratory Disorders at the University of Rome 'La Sapienza'. It was chosen because its round shape with surprised expression, small nose and open mouth mirrors the typical face of a patient with OSAS (pre-therapy). The stone (diameter 1.75 m) in fact represents the face of a screaming faun and was originally found in the Mercury Temple area. According to popular legend, anyone putting his hand in the mouth will have it cut off if he has told a lie. When I first became involved in the field of OSAS about ten years ago, I had no idea that this activity would become foremost in bo...

Analysis of Foods and Beverages: Modern Techniques covers the principles and practical applications of selected analytical methodologies in the field of food and beverages. It also gives an informed forecast of developments in this field. The book focuses on developed fields of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray microanalysis, differential laser light scattering, near-infrared reflectance and Fourier transformations, and continuous-flow and flow-injection analyses. It also includes mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, and bioassay. This text also describes traditional techniques, such as the various forms of chromatography. Furthermore, the book presents an introduction of molecular analysis of synthetic flavors and the automation of food analysis by use of computers, robotics, and other on-line methods. Students, teachers, researchers, and all food analysts will find this book valuable, as it can provide information on the various modern analytical techniques in the food industry.

Modelling Tropospheric Volcanic Aerosol

Anja Schmidt's thesis is a unique and comprehensive evaluation of the impacts of tropospheric volcanic aerosol on the atmosphere, climate, air quality and human health. Using a state-of-the-art global microphysics model, the thesis describes and quantifies the impact of volcanic sulphur emissions on global aerosol, clouds and the radiative forcing of climate. The advanced model enables the first ever estimate of the impact of the emissions on aerosol microphysical properties such as particle number concentrations and sizes, and therefore a considerably improved ability to quantify the climate and air quality effects. There are several important discoveries in this thesis. Firstly, it is show...
