Mobility and Fantasy in Visual Culture

This volume offers a varied and informed series of approaches to questions of mobility—actual, social, virtual, and imaginary—as related to visual culture. Contributors address these questions in light of important contemporary issues such as migration; globalization; trans-nationality and trans-cultural difference; art, space and place; new media; fantasy and identity; and the movement across and the transgression of the proprieties of boundaries and borders. The book invites the reader to read across the collection, noting differences or making connections between media and forms and between audiences, critical traditions and practitioners, with a view to developing a more informed understanding of visual culture and its modalities of mobility and fantasy as encouraged by dominant, emergent, and radical forms of visual practice.

Sacrificial Limbs

Sacrificial Limbs chronicles the everyday lives and political activism of disabled veterans of Turkey’s Kurdish war, one of the most volatile conflicts in the Middle East. Through nuanced ethnographic portraits, Açiksöz examines how veterans’ experiences of war and disability are closely linked to class, gender, and ultimately the embrace of ultranationalist right-wing politics. Bringing the reader into military hospitals, commemorations, political demonstrations, and veterans’ everyday spaces of care, intimacy, and activism, Sacrificial Limbs provides a vivid analysis of the multiple and sometimes contradictory forces that fashion veterans’ bodies, political subjectivities, and communities. It is essential reading for students and scholars interested in anthropology, masculinity, and disability.

The simplicity of collage, together with its strong graphic presence, lent the medium a sense of revolutionary possibility when it was first adopted by avant-garde artists almost 100 years ago. During the twentieth century collage gradually became identified with such artistic practices as Cubism, Dada and Surrealism, and today it has gained new momentum as an energetic art form with a strong political dimension. This stunning book explores the role of collage in contemporary visual culture. Featuring the work of both established talents and a new generation of artists, it examines how collage is used to confront and comment on a world that is dominated by the mass media and obsessed with conspicuous consumerism.

Research: Structure, Process and Behaviour

The book is about research studies. Research studies has been a developing body of knowledge requiring research practitioners and research professionals to expand the horizons of research science. The author has considered the research studies as a discipline and used the term "Researchology" as a terminology for research studies as a discipline with its structure, process and behavioural aspects. This is probably the first attempt in academic world to view research studies as a discipline. This endeavour is a revealing journey to explore, systematize and formalize research studies as a discipline covering almost all aspects of research science and art of systematic research investigations.

A grid is an abstract, simple mathematical structure ordered by ninety-degree angles and regularly spaced columns and rows. A grid is also the cities we live and work in, the buildings that tower over us, the electricity and fiber-optic networks that sustain our energy and information needs. We do, as the title of this thematic catalogue suggests, "live inside the grid." The pervasive grid-based visual and information systems that have come to increasingly define contemporary life are explored here by 24 international artists, for whom the grid is something very different than the motif it was for 20th century artists. Artists include Absalon, Jennifer Bolande, Jose Damasceno, Do-Ho Su, Luisa Lambri, Langlands & Bell, Mark Lombardi, Rita McBride, N55 and Danica Phelps. Organized around three critical positions, Living Inside the Grid considers the grid in architecture and urban space; interlocking cultural, linguistic and economic grids; and soft grids.

Speculation, Now

  • Categories: Art

Interdisciplinary in design and concept, Speculation, Now illuminates unexpected convergences between images, concepts, and language. Artwork is interspersed among essays that approach speculation and progressive change from surprising perspectives. A radical cartographer asks whether "the speculative" can be represented on a map. An ethnographer investigates religious possession in Islam to contemplate states between the divine and the seemingly human. A financial technologist queries understandings of speculation in financial markets. A multimedia artist and activist considers the relation between social change and assumptions about the conditions to be changed, and an architect posits pur...

Friends of the Divided Mind is an exhibition that addresses the organisations that support contemporary art. The show is divided into four projects that consider potentialities for the future of exhibition histories, artist-run spaces, performative and durational practices, and financially independent art spaces, initiated by a strong desire for alternatives. This is reflected in the partitioning of inquiries, working groups and resources, in support of a shared undertaking by the thirteen curators, who are graduating students on the MA Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art, that in turn subverts traditions of consensual decision making.
