Elemente Einer Kulturkontrastive Linguistik
The papers in this volume document about a decade of teaching experience in the fields of linguistics and foreign languages (German, English as a foreign language) in different cultures (Saudi Arabia, PR China, Morocco). There is no attempt to introduce yet another branch of modern linguistics. Rather, the old theme of the cultural embeddedness of verbal (and non-verbal) behavior is discussed from various perspectives. All papers are based on a large amount of authentic data of culture-specific and intercultural behavior, gathered by participant observation, interviews, tests etc. in the different settings over a long period of time. The main objective is to contribute to an extensional definition of «culture-contrastive linguistics» by a discussion of descriptive and didactic issues in an empirical fashion.
Recent Developments in Forensic Linguistics
This is a selection of papers presented at two 1993-conferences on various areas of research in 'language and law', the Bonn, July 1993, First International Conference of the «International Association of Forensic Linguists» and the 'Forensic Linguistics'-Workshop at the Xth World Congress of AILA in Amsterdam, August 1993. The volume documents theoretical (linguistic) implications, methodological postulates, a variety of analytical techniques and tools, professional and ethical maxims and the multitude of «real world»-problems faced and tackled by the forensic linguistic expert giving testimony in court. It marks the beginning of a truly international discussion of representatives of the field from various countries and cultural backgrounds.
Contemporary Approaches to Legal Linguistics
In this volume, scholars explore and discuss current issues in Theoretical Legal Linguistics (TLL) and Applied Legal Linguistics (ALL), contributing to the growing body of international research in the field. Focus is placed on the interconnected skills, tasks and approaches to the study of legal language in its plethora of facets as presented at the first international conference and the second International Legal Linguistics Workshop (ILLWS19) of the Austrian Association for Legal Linguistics. The articles present research in the areas of contract interpretation, bijuralism, the European Reference Language System, clear language and communication in legal settings, issues in legal semantics, plain legal language in multilingual legislative drafting, legal language teaching, light verb constructions in legal German, forensic linguistic expert testimony, deontic modality in legislative drafting, migration and legal language, appeals in Russian and their qualification as language crimes, and graduation in the use of force statutes. Indigenous Grammar Across Cultures
This book deals with various «indigenous» traditions of grammatical thought across the globe. Its main perspective is a cross-cultural sociolinguistic and anthropological linguistic account of «Indigenous Grammar». The concept (relating to Bruno Liebich's term 'Einheimische Grammatik') is taken in its widest sense here to account for a continua of forms and ways of language-oriented research, various degrees of systematic reflection on language structure and use, the culture-specific ingredients of different grammatical «schools», linguistic and folk-linguistic speculation, language awareness, linguistic ideologies and similar endeavours. Some assumptions underlying the central hypotheses of this book are: - Linguistics, every grammatical description, has a strong cultural binding. - It is worthwhile to describe the culturally bound differences in a systematic fashion. - There are indigenous grammars and grammarians of entirely different denominations than what Western linguists are accustomed to dealing with. - A heuristic continua of indigenous grammar can be set up which is worth being studied by linguists in a cross-cultural comparative fashion.

The Idea of Progress in Forensic Authorship Analysis
This Element examines progress in research and practice in forensic authorship analysis. It describes the existing research base and examines what makes an authorship analysis more or less reliable. Further to this, the author describes the recent history of forensic science and the scientific revolution brought about by the invention of DNA evidence. They chart the rise of three major changes in forensic science - the recognition of contextual bias in analysts, the need for validation studies and shift in logic of providing identification evidence. This Element addresses the idea of progress in forensic authorship analysis in terms of these three issues with regard to new knowledge about the nature of authorship and methods in stylistics and stylometry. The author proposes that the focus needs to shift to validation of protocols for approaching case questions, rather than on validation of systems or general approaches. Discourse Analysis and Pragmatics
Previous works on Discourse Analysis and Pragmatics have either been dominantly focused on theory or on practice without much balance and attention to both theory and analysis. The present volume seeks to strike a balance between the two closely related disciplines on the one hand, and between the study of theory in the two disciplines and on issues of methodology and application in specific areas of enquiry on the other. The book seeks to provide a cross-sectional view of scholarship in these areas, specifically from the perspective of how the intersection of theory and practice enables Nigerian scholars of Discourse Analysis and Pragmatics to understand and analyse texts that have pan-Nigerian peculiarities.
