The €uro and the Dollar in a Globalized Economy
The dollar has been the dominant currency of the world economy for almost a century; since 2002, the euro has gained widespread international acceptance resulting in important institutional, economic and financial changes both for the euro zone, the United States and the world economies, affecting foreign exchange and financial markets as well as economic activities around the world. In years to come, the international role of the euro will hinge on the validity of the fundamental idea underlying its creation, namely that important components of sovereignty can be pooled and shared among nations in the pursuit of common economic and political objectives. This key book assesses the international role of the euro, discusses its impact on global financial markets, shifting global exchange rate relationships and their implications. With input from various disciplines (economics, business and political science), it foments discussions intended to facilitate an exchange of ideas among academics, practitioners and the local business community.
Exile Memories and the Dutch Revolt
The Dutch Revolt (ca. 1572-1648) led to the displacement of tens of thousands of people. In Exile Memories and the Dutch Revolt, Johannes Müller shows how migrants and their descendants in the Dutch Republic, England and Germany cultivated their Netherlandish heritage for more than 200 years. Memories of war and persecution shaped new religious and political identities that combined images of suffering and heroism and served as foundational narratives of newcomers. Exposing the underlying narrative structures of early modern exile memories, this volume shows how stories about the Dutch Revolt allowed migrants to participate in their host societies rather than producing a closed and exclusive diaspora. While narratives of religious persecution attracted non-migrants as well, exile networks were able to connect newcomers and established residents.

I. In some periods of the past Netherlands medicine has played a major role in the evolution of European medicine; today its history still enjoys much in terest even at the other side of the Ocean. In this bibliography it has been my endeavour to compile references for all that has been written on the history of Dutch medicine in our country and elsewhere in our age. The main concern of this work is with the medicine of the Northern Nether lands. However, before the end ofthe sixteenth century the Northern and South ern Netherlands were not yet divided into two separate countries; they were still politically one and for the greater part spoke the same Flemish language. So be fore their separation the present-day Belgium and Netherlands also had a com mon medical history. Therefore many entries have been included which bear on early (and sometimes later) Flemish medicine, but it has not been the inten tion to strive for completeness in this respect.
