Recent archaeological finds in China have made possible a reconstruction of the ancient history of Sichauan, the country's most populous province. Excavated artifacts and newly recovered texts can now supplement traditional textual materials. Combing these materials, Sage shows how Sichauan matured from peripheral obscurity to attain central importance in the formation of the Chinese empire during the first millennium B.C.

Plants have cultural histories, and their culturally known applications change through time and across contexts. This pattern is seen in all types of uses that humans make of plants, from trees used for construction, through species used for perfume through to food plants. However, it is medicinal plants that have attracted considerable attention recently, whether as a justification of plant conservation efforts or through the perception that direct use of medicinal plants may offer something that is not delivered by orthodox medicine. This volume's two central aims are to demonstrate that plant knowledge is not paradigmatic positive knowledge but situational and arises in relationships, and to show that modern medicinal plant discovery can be viewed as the epitome of a long history of borrowing, stealing, and exchanging plants.
Plant diseases and pests cause significant losses to farmers and threaten food security worldwide. Monitoring the growing conditions of crops and detecting plant diseases is critical for sustainable agriculture. Traditionally, crop inspection has been carried out by people with expert knowledge in the field. However, regarding any activity carried out by humans, this activity is prone to errors, leading to possible incorrect decisions. Innovation is, therefore, an essential fact of modern agriculture. In this context, deep learning has played a key role in solving complicated applications with increasing accuracy over time, and recent interest in this type of technology has prompted its potential application to address complex problems in agriculture, such as plant disease and pest recognition. Although substantial progress has been made in the area, several challenges still remain, especially those that limit systems to operate in real-world scenarios.
