Learning the City
This book explores a cultural understanding of cities and processes of civic learning by scrutinizing urban educational topics from a cultural studies perspective. This book approaches the city as a cultural fabric that consists of social, material and symbolic dimensions, and describes how civic learning is not an accidental outcome of cities but an essential component through which citizens coproduce the city. Through a combination of theoretical development and methodological reflection the chapters in the book explore three interrelated questions addressing the relationships between culture, learning and the city: How does civic learning appear in urban spaces? How does civic learning take place through urban spaces? How are urban spaces created as a result of civic learning?
Education, Space and Urban Planning
This book examines a range of practical developments that are happening in education as conducted in urban settings across different scales. It contains insights that draw upon the fields of urban planning/urbanism, geography, architecture, education and pedagogy. It brings together current thinking and practical experience from German and international perspectives. This discussion is organised in four segments: schools and the neighbourhood; education and the neighbourhood; education and the city and finally, education and the region. Contributors cover a wide range of contemporary and significant socio-political aspects of education over the last decade. They reinforce emergent thinking that space and its urban context are important dimensions of education. This book also underscores the need for more research in the relationships between education and urban development itself. Current urban planning does not fully connect our understanding in education with what we know in the spatial and planning sciences. Accordingly, this release is an early attempt to bring together a growing body of integrated and interdisciplinary reflection on education theory and practice.
Challenging the boxes
Challenges of sustainability and transition need innovative tools for the understanding, mapping, designing and governing of manmade sites and territories. Complementary to standard land use categories, such as housing and agriculture, this book of essays introduces eleven ‘interface categories’, labels for land use interactions, transitions, mixes, and spatial and temporal positions in between. Authors from different disciplines describe and illustrate how this set of interfaces resonates with their own projects, challenges and agendas, and how it sheds light on new land use agents, on unregistered forms of land occupation, and on opportunities for socio-economic and ecosystem services. The concept of interfaces encourages the development of adapted modes of planning and management for urban, rural or natural environments, and on different spatial scales.
Stadtbaustein Bildung

De sleutel past niet meer op elke deur. Dynamische gezinnen en flexibel wonen
Gezinnen zijn vandaag dynamisch, flexibel en divers, en dus stellen ze nieuwe eisen op het vlak van wonen. Jongvolwassenen nestelen zich in Hotel Mama. Boemerangkinderen keren na een scheiding terug naar het ouderlijke huis. Heel wat kinderen maar ook volwassenen in een LAT-relatie zijn woonnomaden die pendelen tussen twee huizen. Nieuw samengestelde gezinnen zijn de ene week met twee en de volgende met zes. De woonmarkt evolueert minder snel, de nieuwe gezinnen wonen vaak in traditionele woningen. Nieuwe trends zoals cohousing en kangoeroewonen zijn creatieve oplossingen die nog maar voor een minderheid haalbaar of aantrekkelijk zijn. Ook het woonbeleid hinkt achterop. Vele regels blijken het samenwonen of samenhuizen meer te bemoeilijken dan te bevorderen. De sleutel past niet meer op elke deur. De auteurs geven analyses, visies en suggesties voor een actueler woon- en gezinsbeleid. Want het is tijd om ook in te spelen op de woonbehoeften van hedendaagse gezinnen, niet alleen op die van het traditionele gezin van de vorige eeuw.
