The Venetians: A Novel

Little golden cloudlets, like winged living creatures, were hanging high up in the rosy glow above Santa Maria della Salute, and all along the Grand Canal the crowded gondolas were floating in a golden haze, and all the westward-facing palace windows flashed and shone with an illumination which the lamps and lanterns that were to be lighted after sundown could never equal, burnt they never so merrily. It was Shrove Tuesday in Venice, Carnival time. The sun had been shining on the city and on the lagunes all day long. It was one of those Shrove Tuesdays which recall the familiar proverb— “Sunshine at Carnival, Fireside at Easter.” But who cares about the chance of cold and gloom six wee...

The Cross of Sacrifice: Officers Who Died in the Service of British, Indian and East African Regiments and Corps, 1914-1919

A tremendous piece of research, conducted over ten years, in which are listed, in alphabetical order, the names of over 60,000 officers of the British Empire who died during the Great War, including nurses and female aid workers. Based on the CWGC Registers, the information provided includes not only that shown in ‘Officers Died' but also the place of burial or commemoration. The alphabetical listing means that looking up a name does not require prior knowledge of the regiment (as in ‘Officers Died') though this information is given, as well as cross-reference to the relevant page number in ‘Officers Died’.

Supervision In The Helping Professions

"Supervision in the Helping Professions remains a core text in our trainings and we welcome the updates, including the increased focus on ethics and diversity, the discussion of e-enabled modes of supervision and the review of research. What is so encouraging to students, trainers and practitioners is the 'beginner's mind' with which the authors continue to approach the subject, their tireless enthusiasm for enquiry, and their commitment to the learning edge. The launch of this edition coincides with the launch of the first UKCP Professional Register for Supervisors. The authors have done much to promote the development of supervision, and all future professional trainings in supervision wil...
