The Bellman Continuum

This volume is a collection of some of the most significant mathematical works of Prof Richard E Bellman. Ten areas of Prof Bellman's mathematical research were selected by his co-workers for this volume. Each chapter starts with an introductory comment on the significance of Bellman's contribution. Some important mathematical theories are put forward and their applications in physics and biology such as the mathematical aspect of chemotherapy and the analysis of biological systems are included in this book.

Information Linkage Between Applied Mathematics and Industry is a collection of papers dealing with mathematics in engineering context and applications. One paper describes Chernoff faces as a technique of representing multidimensional data and compares the technique with Andrews' sine curves and Anderson's metroglyphys. Another paper investigates practical problems that can arise during implementation of the methods of parameter optimization, using as an example the trajectory of the space shuttle from liftoff to insertion into orbit. One paper analyzes Soviet foreign policy using a graphical representation of k-dimensional data as a statistical tool, written specifically for analysts in fo...

Women Scientists and Engineers Employed in Industry

This book, based on a conference, examines both quantitative and qualitative evidence regarding the low employment of women scientists and engineers in the industrial work force of the United States, as well as corporate responses to this underparticipation. It addresses the statistics underlying the question "Why so few?" and assesses issues related to the working environment and attrition of women professionals.

Optimal Long-Term Operation of Electric Power Systems

This book deals with a very important problem in power system planning for countries in which hydrogeneration accounts for the greatest part of the system power production. During the past thirty years many techniques have been developed to cope with the long-term operation of hydro reser voirs. These techniques have been discussed in a number of publications, but they have not until now been documented in book form. This book is intended as the foundation for a special graduate course dealing with aspects of electrical engineering, operational research, water resource research, and applied mathematics. It may also be used for self study by practicing personnel involved in the planning and operation of hydroelectric power systems for utilities, consulting groups, and government regulatory agencies. The book consists of eight chapters. Chapter 1 reviews the historical developments in the field, discusses briefly all techniques used to solve the problem, and summarizes the modeling of hydroplants for long-term operation studies. At the end of the chapter we present in detail an outline of the book.

Applied Nonlinear Analysis contains the proceedings of an International Conference on Applied Nonlinear Analysis, held at the University of Texas at Arlington, on April 20-22, 1978. The papers explore advances in applied nonlinear analysis, with emphasis on reaction-diffusion equations; optimization theory; constructive techniques in numerical analysis; and applications to physical and life sciences. In the area of reaction-diffusion equations, the discussions focus on nonlinear oscillations; rotating spiral waves; stability and asymptotic behavior; discrete-time models in population genetics; and predator-prey systems. In optimization theory, the following topics are considered: inverse and...

Applied Mathematics in Aerospace Science and Engineering

This book contains the proceedings ofthe meeting on "Applied Mathematics in the Aerospace Field," held in Erice, Sicily, Italy from September 3 to September 10, 1991. The occasion of the meeting was the 12th Course of the School of Mathematics "Guido Stampacchia," directed by Professor Franco Giannessi of the University of Pisa. The school is affiliated with the International Center for Scientific Culture "Ettore Majorana," which is directed by Professor Antonino Zichichi of the University of Bologna. The objective of the course was to give a perspective on the state-of the-art and research trends concerning the application of mathematics to aerospace science and engineering. The course was ...

Numerical Integration

This volume contains refereed papers and extended abstracts of papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop entitled 'Numerical Integration: Recent Developments, Software and Applications', held at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada, August 11-15, 1986. The Workshop was attended by thirty-six scientists from eleven NATO countries. Thirteen invited lectures and twenty-two contributed lectures were presented, of which twenty-five appear in full in this volume, together with extended abstracts of the remaining ten. It is more than ten years since the last workshop of this nature was held, in Los Alamos in 1975. Many developments have occurred in quadrature in the intervening years...

Optimal Control of Distributed Nuclear Reactors

This book is devoted to the mathematical optimization theory and modeling techniques that recently have been applied to the problem of controlling the shape and intensity of the power density distribution in the core of large nuclear reactors. The book has been prepared with the following purposes in mind: 1. To provide, in a condensed manner, the background preparation on reactor kinetics required for a comprehensive description of the main problems encountered in designing spatial control systems for nuclear reactor cores. 2. To present the work that has already been done on this subject and provide the basic mathematical tools required for a full understand ing of the different methods pr...
