Tom Spanbauer’s first novel in seven years is a love story triangle akin to The Marriage Plot and Freedom, only with a gay main character who charms gays and straights alike. I Loved You More is a rich, expansive tale of love, sex, and heartbreak, covering twenty-five years in the life of a striving, emotionally wounded writer. In New York, Ben forms a bond of love with his macho friend and foil, Hank. Years later in Portland, a now ill Ben falls for Ruth, who provides the care and devotion he needs, though they cannot find true happiness together. Then Hank reappears and meets Ruth, and real trouble starts. Set against a world of struggling artists, the underground sex scene of New York in the 1980s, the drab, confining Idaho of Ben’s youth, and many places in between, I Loved You More is the author’s most complex and wise novel to date.

Born in Brooklyn, New York and experiencing street life real early in my childhood, like around five and six years of age. Life in the streets caused a great imprint in my mind and an awesome impact on my way of thinking. This tremendous awareness in my youth gave new meaning to the word imprint. A few years later, at the age of nine our family, comprised of nine childrens plus my mom and dad, moved to this country town in Pennsylvania, called Lancaster. My Godfather called it the hilly country. My family consisted of six boys and three girls and to us this was a tramatic, overwhelming, and completly over the edge culture shock. It was devastating to say the least. Bewildered, fustrated, and confused, the only thing that kept my sanity was knowing that I was going back to New York, as soon as I finished school. That was my motivation, and that desire to return to Brooklyn, New York was my hope for many days to come.

I hear I do not look like what I have been through. Praise God. (I want God to get the glory from my story.) I have had a lot of tests, trials, and tribulations in my seventy-one years of life. But in order to have a testimony, you need to have a test. God knows I have had test after test. I do have a testimony--I am still here in spite of the death sentences that were on me (not twice, but thr...
