Heidi
When Heidi's parents pass away, her aunt takes her in, but she soon sends Heidi to live with her grandfather in the Swiss Alps. At first, Heidi's grandfather seems gruff, but over time he becomes fond of her. Heidi grows to love the mountains and spends many hours with the goats and Peter, the goatherd, until she is sent to back to the city to be a companion to Clara, an invalid, and receive an education. Heidi learns that though the people in the city have more money, the people in the country lead richer lives. This classic Swiss children's book by Johanna Spyri was published in two parts in 1880 and 1881. This unabridged version comes from a 1915 edition, translated from the original German by Elisabeth P. Stork and illustrated by Maria L. Kirk.
The Number Poems
Matthew Welton is a poet enchanted by form and process. Many of the Number Poems abide by subtle patterns or constraints, creating symmetries in the arrangement of sentences, lines, words, or metrical feet. As with good architecture, however, Welton's rules and methods resist exclamation; rather, they are the framework upon which are established localised ambiances, be they of warmth or dazzlement, the home or the dream. Other sequences, such as the mind-altering 'Melodies for the meanwhile', begin with a palette of words and images and recombine them kaleidoscopically. By adding layers of colour and sound, Welton composes a modulating sensory wave. Even in silence, we do not so much read these poems as perform them.
Incarnation
The poems in Clare Pollard's new collection Incarnation are about our children and the stories that we tell them. Whether looking at the discourse around pregnancy, describing the pain of childbirth or thinking about surveillance at soft play, they blur the personal and political. Pinocchio, Hamelin, Alice and The Tiger who Came to Tea make appearances alongside biblical tales: the ark, the whale's belly, the Moses basket in the rushes. There are poems for lost daughters - Amy Winehouse, Madeleine McCann, the victims of honour killings - and lost sons. There are also poems about innocence and responsibility which ask what it means to bring new human beings into this world, and how we shape them through our words.

Signing the Body Poetic
