Beginning with volume 41 (1979), the University of Texas Press became the publisher of the Handbook of Latin American Studies, the most comprehensive annual bibliography in the field. Compiled by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress and annotated by a corps of more than 130 specialists in various disciplines, the Handbook alternates from year to year between social sciences and humanities. The Handbook annotates works on Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and the Guianas, Spanish South America, and Brazil, as well as materials covering Latin America as a whole. Most of the subsections are preceded by introductory essays that serve as biannual evaluations of the literature and research under way in specialized areas. The Handbook of Latin American Studies is the oldest continuing reference work in the field. Lawrence Boudon became the editor in 2000. Is Brazil part of Latin America or an island unto itself? This book offers the reader a critical and interdisciplinary introduction to Brazilian history. Combining a didactic approach with insightful historical analysis, it discusses the main political, cultural, and social developments taking place in the Latin American country from 1500 to 2010. The historical narrative leads the reader step by step and in chronological succession to a clear understanding of the country’s three main historical periods: the Colonial Period (1500-1822), the Empire (1822-1889), and the Republic (1889-present). Each phase is treated separately and subdivided according to the political developments and successive regional forces that controlled the nation’s territory throughout the centuries. At the end of each section, an individual chapter discusses the foremost cultural and artistic developments of the period, engaging perspectives on literature, music, and the visual arts, including cinema. As crônicas do capítulo 5 tratam da sociabilidade urbana, da vida cultural e artística, do esporte e do lazer, momentos de ócio que proporcionavam aos moradores da cidade o desejado refrigério na "luta pela vida", abrindo espaço para novas formas de viver coletivamente o ambiente urbano. Essas atividades forneciam aos habitantes da cidade o necessário alimento para o sonho naquela turbulenta segunda metade da década de 1920.
O livro aqui apresentado pretende questionar a interpretação tradicional da historiografia brasileira sobre a oposição da grande imprensa carioca ao segundo governo Vargas (1951-1954), que seria motivada pela incompatibilidade entre uma imprensa liberal e um governo nacionalista. Tais pressupostos são exaustivamente analisados, permitindo verificar que nem o governo Vargas foi "nacionalista e anti-imperialista" nem a chamada grande imprensa era necessariamente liberal e "entreguista". Constata-se, ao contrário, que ambos mais se aproximavam do que se distanciavam em termos de política econômica, pois compartilhavam boa parte dos princípios desenvolvimentistas que, à época, ganhavam densidade teórica com a CEPAL. Embora ainda se perceba a forte divergência política entre esses atores, os quais, porém, focavam-se mais nas políticas inclusivas sustentadas por Vargas em sua vida pública.
