It's Like a Dream to Me

Paddy McCarthy was born on October 19th, 1903, nearly two months before the Wright Brothers first flew at Kittyhawk. In "It's like a Dream to Me", 100-year-old Paddy reminisces about the major events that occurred in his life over the past hundred years. From the trials and tribulations of being educated by the nuns to setting out for the "Boston States" in the early 1920's, to avoiding U-Boats during World War II, Paddy experienced it all. Many of Paddy's tales and stories describe a bygone era in Newfoundland's vibrant past. He vividly recalls helping remove bodies from the wreck of the Florizel when just fourteen years old. He also fondly remembers dances and garden parties or "times" as he calls them. It's like a Dream to Me can be considered a time capsule of 20th century Newfoundland life.

In a world increasingly driven by artificial intelligence, leadership needs to move beyond the "agile" approach that dominated organizational leadership practices at the end of the 20th century. What is required now for successful leaders is a skillful juxtaposition of proactivity and humility, which we call "guiding the tide." Successful leaders of today must demonstrate personal agency in order to guide the tide of events around them rather than have the tide of events sweep them along. The "tide," like a river within an ocean akin to a gulf stream, is a unique, ever-changing stream of business systems, technology, consumers, and competitors. This book uses storytelling, examples, and clea...

Sing and Sing On

"In Sentinel Musicians of the Ethiopian American Diaspora, Kay Kaufman Shelemay shares more than forty years of research among Ethiopian musicians in the midst of a widespread and evolving diaspora. Beginning on the eve of the Ethiopian revolution in 1974 all the way up to the present day, Shelemay follows musicians as some leave Ethiopia for the US, setting up essential networks of support in cities such as New York, Boston, and Washington, DC. Throughout this profound transition, Shelemay shows how Ethiopian musicians serve a critical function in social and political life by both safeguarding community identity and challenging authority within Ethiopian society. She coins the term "sentine...
