Das Institut Gatersleben und seine Geschichte
Das Institut für Kulturpflanzenforschung wurde von der Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft noch in den letzten Jahren des 2. Weltkrieges in Wien gegründet. Nach dem Krieg wurde es am nordöstlichen Harzrand in Gatersleben auf- und zu einem großen Forschungszentrum für Genetik und Kulturpflanzenforschung ausgebaut. Mit seinen Leistungen und seiner Einbindung in die Zeitgeschichte steht es exemplarisch für die Wissenschaftsentwicklung in unterschiedlichen politischen Systemen. Zugleich zeigt es, wie die Menschen, welche die Entwicklung trugen, mit gegebenen Situationen umgingen und auch in der DDR erreichten, dass ihr Institut den Anschluss an die internationalen Entwicklungen nicht verlor.
