The First World War as a Turning Point / Wendezeit Weltkrieg

The First World War led to a fundamental reorganization of international relations. This had a profound impact on churches and mission agencies and their ecumenical networks. European Christianity was increasingly questioned. The shock was all the greater since the war alliances were formed without taking religious orientation into consideration. This volume examines the impact of the war on church and mission especially in Africa and Asia. The contributions provide a wide scope of historical analyses with a focus on the Hermannsburg Mission. The symposium was organized by the Ludwig-Harms-Kuratorium and the Fachhochschule für Interkulturelle Theologie Hermannsburg in 2018.

The Bahurutshe

The Bahurutshe explores the history, culture and religion of the Bahurutse in the North-West Province of South Africa. The historical dates, facts, and events of Batswana are informed by verbal tradition. This information attains greater transparancy when the chiefs admit European missionaries into their midst. In this book, Chief Moiloa II plays a prominent role by leading his migratory tribe to settle at Dinokana and including the missionaries in his tribe. The largest contribution towards this book was made by three missionaries from the Hermannsburg Mission Society, who submitted numerous reports to their superiors in Germany. The author, Heinrich Bammann, ministered a Lutheran congregation of the Bahurutshe for ten years. (Series: ?Sources and Contributions to the History of the Hermannsburg Mission and the Lutheran. The contribution of German ethnography to Australian anthropological scholarship on Aboriginal societies and cultures has been limited, primarily because few people working in the field read German. But it has also been neglected because its humanistic concerns with language, religion and mythology contrasted with the mainstream British social anthropological tradition that prevailed in Australia until the late 1960s. The advent of native title claims, which require drawing on the earliest ethnography for any area, together with an increase in research on rock art of the Kimberley region, has stimulated interest in this German ethnography, as have some recent book translations. Even so, seve...
