Neurosurgery
In a specialized field such as neurosurgery, highly specific knowledge is required. Training programs in the EU vary, making it difficult to standardize medical training. This manual forms the basis for a European consensus in neurosurgery. It is written for residents, students and physicians with a special interest in neurosurgery. Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are detailed according to localization (cranial, spinal, peripheral nerves) with special consideration given to congenital defects and pediatric neurosurgical disorders, functional and stereotactic neurosurgery, as well as critical neurosurgical care. Each chapter contains the basics of anatomy and physiology. The book is well-organized and clearly structured according to each entity and its neurosurgical treatment options. A better understanding of specific neurosurgical problems will help practicing neurosurgeons provide better medical care for their patients, and will also provide the neurosurgery resident with a reliable European standard for step-by-step management of neurosurgical problems, which will prove useful when preparing for the board examination.
Pathways in Applied Immunology
This book is dedicated to the memory of Walter Brendel, late Professor of Experimental Surgery and Chairman of the Institute for Surgical Research at the University of Munich, Germany. For 20 years Walter Brendel organized the renowned Round Table Symposium on Applied Immunology, first in Kitzbiihel and later in Axams, Austria. On the occasion of the 20th symposium in January 1989 he gathered together a number of scientists who have been leaders in the field of transplantation immunology and clinical transplantation for the past two decades. All of them had participated at previous meetings, some on a regular basis. Many of the new discoveries in applied immunology and transplantation medicine were first presented and vividly dis cussed at the Round Table Symposia. The annual Kitzbiihel! Axams meetings became well-known and invitations much sought after, not only for this reason but also because of the uniquely intimate atmosphere that promoted the free exchange of research findings and theoretical cut and thrust.

The present series of monographs originated in discussions, which convinced us of the need for texts on metasasis which would contain not only basic and clinical observations on human beings and where neces sary, on experimental animals but also discussions of the state of the art in diagnosis and therapy. Neurosurgery of Arteriovenous Malformations and Fistulas
Arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) differ from all other pathology affecting the central nervous system by their high-flow arteriovenous shunts. Permanent occlusion of these shunts is the essence and the challenge of therapy. Endovascular therapy and radiosurgery became accepted alternatives or adjuncts to surgery. In many instances the choice of the primary therapeutic modality is not clear and arguments can be found for several options. However, microsurgery, endovascular therapy and radiosurgery differ very much with regard to invasiveness, length of stay at the hospital but also residual risk after therapy. The emerging treatment concepts are the object of this book. The result is a unique structured presentation of AVM and AVF therapy.
Intracranial Pressure III
The papers presented at the Third International Symposium on Intracranial Pressure that was held at the University of Groningen. June 1-3, 1976 are brought together in this volume. After the successful meetings in Hannover and Lund the feeling of the Advisory Board was. that the third meeting should have more clinical implications. and therefore 7 out of the 10 Sessions deal with clinical problems. That there is still a growing interest in the problems of the intracranial pressure appears from the fact that 152 papers were submitted. Unfortunately only 56 could be read. due to lack of time. The selection was made by the members of the Advisory Board. It is a pity that so many good papers had to be rejected because they did not fit in the program. It was decided in a meeting of chairmen and co-chairmen during the symposium that the next congress will take place in 1979. to keep away from the CBF-meeting in June 1977 in Copenhagen and the "Brain-Edema" meeting in 1979 in Bethesda. This fourth symposium will be held in Williamsburg (USA) and prepared by Donald P. Becker. Douglas Miller. Gerald M. Hochwald and Kenneth Shulman.
