Peace Through Peace Media?

How does the media contribute to peacebuilding and reconciliation in a post-conflict environment? This dissertation examines the question with respect to the media's involvement during the UN and NATO mission in Kosovo (UNMIK and KFOR), from 1999 to 2008. The theoretical part of the book deals with existing approaches to peace journalism, effective organizational communication, and media effects theories. In the empirical part, the evaluation first focuses on the content of the media produced by UNMIK and KFOR in Kosovo, followed by the assessment of media production processes in both missions. The book also explores the impact of UNMIK's and KFOR's media within the local Kosovar population. It argues that "peace media" can have a positive impact in a post-conflict environment, provided that it features de-escalation oriented content and is framed according to the preferences and attitudes of target audiences. Dissertation. (Series: Schriftenreihe der Stipendiatinnen und Stipendiaten der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung - Vol. 43)

Contested Lands

The search for durable peace in lands torn by ethno-national conflict is among the most urgent issues of international politics. Looking closely at five flashpoints of regional crisis, Sumantra Bose asks the question upon which our global future may depend: how can peace be made, and kept, between warring groups with seemingly incompatible claims? Global in scope and implications but local in focus and method, Contested Lands critically examines the recent or current peace processes in Israel-Palestine, Kashmir, Bosnia, Cyprus, and Sri Lanka for an answer. Israelis and Palestinians, Turkish and Greek Cypriots, Bosnia's Muslims, Serbs, and Croats, Sinhalese and Tamil Sri Lankans, and pro-inde...

The Palgrave Handbook of Critical Human Resource Development

This handbook presents an expansive exploration of critical theory, critical perspectives, critical praxis, and the impact on the research, theory, and practice of Human Resource Development (HRD). Critical Human Resource Development (CHRD) aims to challenge the normative structures, practices, policies, definitions, and approaches which have historically dominated the field of Human Resource Development (HRD). As an approach to HRD, CHRD raises awareness of social systems, organizational policies and practices, and research paradigms that silence new ways of knowing and understanding, while advancing underrepresented and emerging approaches. Through an analysis of power and privilege, moral...

Some Kind of Justice

  • Categories: Law

Through an in-depth case study, Some Kind of Justice offers fresh insights about two questions now the subject of robust debate: What goals can we plausibly assign to international criminal tribunals? What factors determine the impact of distant courts on societies that have seen vicious violence? The book offers a timely and original account of how the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) affected local communities, and the factors that shape its changing impact over time.
