Genetic disorders are still perceived as an uncommon event in our general population. However the literature reveals that every year an estimated 7.9 million children (6 percent of total births worldwide) are born with a serious birth defect of genetic or partially genetic origin. Additional hundreds of thousands more are born with serious birth defects of post-conception origin, including maternal exposure to environmental agents (teratogens) such as alcohol, rubella, syphilis and iodine deficiency that can harm a developing fetus.

Ultrasound in Medicine

This is the fourth volume of Ultrasound in Medicine, the Proceedings of the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. Unless the Executive Board of the Institute change their mind, it may also be the last. Under these circumstances it is somewhat ironical that some of the deficiencies present in previous volumes appear to have been solved in the present volume. Notably, the Programme Committee, for the first time, exercised a stringent selection procedure by means of which the number of papers selected for presentation was limited with the result that both the quality of papers accepted for presentation and publication was improved and the number of simul...

Contrast Echocardiography

Why a book on contrast echocardiography? Over the past dozen years enough experience has accumulated to warrant a more extensive treatment of this method. Furthermore, there are new developments that suggest increased clinical utility for contrast echocardiography in the future. This book aims to summarize the "state of the art" for those interested in echocardiography - presumably mainly cardiologists, but here and there those of a more technical bent will find useful information as well. We feel that a more basic understanding of microbubble dynamics is necessary to advance research for such applications as transmission through the lungs, videodensitometric quantitation of cardiac output, intracardiac shunts, etc. All of these topics are extensively dealt with. The reader will note that many of the clinical chapters are written by pediatric cardiologists. This is only natural, since shunt detection and analysis of flow relationships are relatively more important in congenital heart diseases, and cur rently represent the most important uses for contrast echo cardiography in day-to day practice.

Neuromuscular Disease Management and Rehabilitation, Part II: Specialty Care and Therapeutics, an Issue of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinics, E-Book

Neuromuscular disease is a broad term that encompasses many diseases and ailments that either directly or indirectly impair the function of the body’s muscle system, via the nerves. This issue of PMR will provide an overview of current treatments and therapies for a variety of diseases. The GEs have gone through every issue published since 1998, and these 23 chapters will be meant to fill the numerous gaps in PMR’s coverage of the field over the past decade. The issue will include chapters on different treatment techniques, such as exercises, stretches, and nutrition. It will also provide chapters focusing on specific areas of the body, specific conditions, and an update on mobility technology for those with NMDs.
