Centers of the Cancer Universe

A 2022 Choice Reviews Outstanding Academic Title An important history of the development of cancer centers of excellence and the revolution in cancer treatment. In the 1960s a coalition of concerned citizens, scientists and politicians joined forces to convince the federal government to focus its efforts on conquering cancer. The National Cancer Act of 1971 resulted and was signed into law on December 23, 1971 by President Nixon. The national “War on Cancer,” was declared with some leaders naively arguing that the disease would be conquered by the nation’s bicentennial—a mere five years in the future. Over the next five decades scientific discoveries demonstrated the great complexity...

The Compton Press was, like much of the 1960s, a happening. It began, not with a grand design, but with a passion for letterpress printing. This passion was very infectious, and people were drawn to the mix of compositors, machine-minders, proof readers, editors, and typographers initially based in a converted cowshed and coach house in Compton Chamberlayne, Wiltshire. We stubbornly clung onto our liking for letterpress, and this led to our eventual demise, but for the 12 years that we lasted we printed over 500 editions of books, published over 100, and produced many journals, and uncountable items of jobbing printing.

How Cancer Crossed the Color Line

In the course of the 20th century, cancer went from being perceived as a white woman's nemesis to a "democratic disease" to a fearsome threat in communities of color. Drawing on film and fiction, on medical and epidemiological evidence, and on patients' accounts, Keith Wailoo tracks this transformation in cancer awareness, revealing how not only awareness, but cancer prevention, treatment, and survival have all been refracted through the lens of race. Spanning more than a century, the book offers a sweeping account of the forces that simultaneously defined cancer as an intensely individualized and personal experience linked to whites, often categorizing people across the color line as racial...

Prostate Cancer and the Man You Love

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men after skin cancer. However this cancer is highly curable and most men live for many years after treatment; only eleven percent of cancer deaths are due to prostate cancer. It is well known that the side effects of the treatment cause more suffering than the disease itself. Side effects of surgery include incontinence and erectile difficulties; radiation therapy leads to urinary and bowel problems; and androgen deprivation (hormone) therapy leads to a broad range of long-term side effects affecting physical and emotional functioning. But it is not only the man who suffers through treatment and its side effects. The partners and spou...
