During the last years computational methods lead to new approaches that can be applied within medical practice. Based on the tremendous advances in medical imaging and high-performance computing, virtual testing is able to help in medical decision processes or implant designs. Current challenges in medicine and engineering are related to the application of computational methods to clinical medicine and the study of biological systems at different scales. Additionally manufacturers will be able to use computational tools and methods to predict the performance of their medical devices in virtual patients. The physical and animal testing procedures could be reduced by virtual prototyping of medical devices. Here simulations can enhance the performance of alternate device designs for a range of virtual patients. This will lead to a refinement of designs and to safer products. This book summarizes different aspects of approaches to enhance function, production, initialization and complications of different types of implants and related topics.

Future Trends in Production Engineering

To meet and adapt to the current and future trends and issues in technology and society, the science committee of The German Academic Society for Production Engineering (WGP) continues to define future topics for production technology. These themes represent not only the key focus for the scientific work of the WGP, but also the central themes of the first annual conference in June 2011, whose paper is publically available in this volume. Such themes, including electric mobility, medical technology, lightweight construction, and resource efficiency, as well as mass production ability have all been identified as future, large-scale, and long-term drivers of change. Future trends influence changes sustainably and fundamentally; they permeate society, technology, economics, and value systems and have an effect in virtually all areas of life. The WGP has, as part of its research, established for itself the goal of not only observing these emerging changes, but also of supervising and influencing their development in order to ensure steady progress, secure sustainability, and shape the future.

Advanced Flow Cytometry: Applications in Biological Research

Flow cytometry has rapidly evolved into a technique for rapid analysis of DNA content, cellular marker expression and electronic sorting of cells of interest for further investigations. Flow cytometers are being extensively used for monitoring of cellular DNA content, phenotype expression, drug transport, calcium flux, proliferation and apoptosis. Phenotypic analysis of marker expression in leukemic cells has become an important tool for diagnostic and therapeutic monitoring of patients. Recent studies have explored the use of flow cytometry for monitoring hormone receptor expression in human solid tumors and for studies in human genomics. Contributions in the current volume are based on presentations made at the First Indo-US workshop on Flow Cytometry in which experts from USA, UK and India discussed applications of flow cytometry in biological and medical research. This book will be of interest to post graduates and researchers in the fields of pathology, cytology, cell biology and molecular biology.

Canine lymphoma pathogenesis, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment: current and future perspectives

Canine lymphoma is the most common hematopoietic neoplasm in dogs, arising from monoclonal expansion of B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, or null cells (non-B and non-T, natural killer cells - NK). It might originate in any area of the body and its most striking feature is its heterogeneity, accounting for more than 30 different subtypes. Novel entities have recently been described and characterized in canine medicine, such as diffuse small B-cell lymphoma and small cell T cell intestinal lymphoma, to list a few. Despite extensive studies, recent progression in therapeutical approaches and improved outcomes, relapse or recurrence remain a common problem with conventional therapy for intermediate...

Analysis and improvement of the in vitro transfection efficiency of plasmid-DNA encoding for equine IL-12 used for melanoma therapy in horses

In horses studies targeting equine melanoma therapy using DNA encoding for cytokines as interleukin 12 (IL-12) have shown some promising results. Nevertheless, complete remission after treatment has been only observed in few cases, possibly due to reduced therapy efficiency. Herein transfection efficiency and methodology-induced cytotoxicity were analysed after transfection with different nanoparticle-mediated and conventional approaches using eukaryotic DNA-expression-plasmids and mammalian cell lines. The addition of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to the transfection protocols significantly increased transfection efficiency when compared to a conventional FHD mediated transfection protocol, an...
