This book depicts the long rich life and wide ranging work of Count Athanasius Raczyński (1788–1874). By exploring his complex personality, his processes of thought and his accomplishments, it reveals a man at once a wealthy aristocrat, a Pole in the Prussian diplomatic service, an active participant in and perceptive observer and critical commentator on political life, a connoisseur and art collector of European renown, and the author of ground breaking studies on German and Portuguese art – in short a distinguished and fascinating nineteenth century figure.
Representing the Past in the Art of the Long Nineteenth Century
This edited collection explores the intersection of historical studies and the artistic representation of the past in the long nineteenth century. The case studies provide not just an account of the pursuit of history in art within Western Europe but also examples from beyond that sphere. These cover canonical and conventional examples of history painting as well as more inclusive, ‘popular’ and vernacular visual cultural phenomena. General themes explored include the problematics internal to the theory and practice of academic history painting and historical genre painting, including compositional devices and the authenticity of artefacts depicted; relationships of power and purpose in historical art; the use of historical art for alternative Liberal and authoritarian ideals; the international cross-fertilisation of ideas about historical art; and exploration of the diverse influences of socioeconomic and geopolitical factors. This book will be of particular interest to scholars of the histories of nineteenth-century art and culture.

Die Kreuzfahrerrezeption in der deutschen Malerei des 19. Jahrhunderts
Das geschichtsbegeisterte 19. Jahrhundert entwickelte ein besonderes Interesse an den Kreuzzügen. Mittelalterliche Kreuzfahrer wie etwa Friedrich I. Barbarossa wurden in der Kunst als nationale Helden gefeiert und spiegeln in der Art ihrer Darstellung politische Hoffnungen und gesellschaftliche Bedürfnisse jener Zeit wider. Anhand eindrucksvoller Werke von Künstlern wie Moritz von Schwind oder Carl Friedrich Lessing liefert diese Arbeit einen faszinierenden Blick auf die umfangreiche Rezeption der Kreuzzüge in der deutschen Historienmalerei und Geschichtswissenschaft des 19. Jahrhunderts
Akademische Strenge und künstlerische Freiheit
Die Kunstsammlung der Universität Göttingen ist vor allem für ihren Bestand an Niederländischer Kunst des 17. Jahrhunderts bekannt. Dass sie darüber hinaus auch eine Kollektion von Gemälden des 19. Jahrhunderts umfasst, die einige wirkliche Schätze enthält, gleicht einer Neuentdeckung. Diese Kollektion wird hier erstmals in einem eigenen Bestandskatalog vorgestellt. Obwohl es sich um eine eher kleine Sammlung handelt, erweist sich diese doch als erstaunlich repräsentativ, um das Kunstverständnis des 19.
