Sabellian Demonstratives
Past research on the Sabellian languages has been devoted mainly to the phonetic and morphological features of these languages as elements for the reconstruction of the prehistoric stages of Latin. The present book aims at analysing the semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic features of a subset of grammatical terms, the demonstratives. It contains a thorough description of their synchronic behaviour, which permits both a comparison to the Latin data with new hypotheses on the epigraphic genres in Republican Italy and a reconstruction of the Italic origins of these terms based on typological principles. Neither the grammar of Sabellian nor the pragmatic scope of the Sabellian inscriptions should be considered a priori identical to their Latin comparanda.

Studia epigraphica et militaria
Das Zusammenwirken und Nebeneinander von militärischen und zivilen Lebenswelten sind in den Provinzen in und nördlich der Alpen vor allem auch als Grenzgebiete des Imperium Romanum von großem Interesse. Das Buch bietet exemplarisch historische, epigraphische und archäologische Untersuchungen unter anderem zu Truppenbewegungen, zu militärischen Anlagen und deren baulicher Entwicklung, zu Performanz und Engagement von militärischem und administrativem Personal und deren Familien, zur Präsenz von Veteranen in Siedlungen und ihren möglichen Einfluss auf Stadtentwicklungen, zum Engagement der Zentrale in Rom in diesem Raum, aber auch zu Infrastrukturmaßnahmen vor Ort. Zudem werden einige bisher unedierte Inschriften vorgelegt und Neulesungen präsentiert. Der Band ist der CIL-Autorin Miroslava Mirković (1933-2020) gewidmet und würdigt deren Forschungsschwerpunkte. Medals and Plaquettes in the Ulrich Middeldorf Collection at the Indiana University Art Museum
Spanning six centuries and seven countries, the Middeldorf Collection--assembled by the late eminent art historian Ulrich Middeldorf--provides an extraordinary overview of major personalities and of political, social, cultural, and religious events as depicted in more than 350 medals and plaquettes. Illustrated in full color and accompanied by extensive documentation are commemorations of kings, queens, emperors, poets, composers, physicians, artists, inventors, popes, cardinals, and bishops. Papal annual and jubilee medals and delightful French reliefs from the Belle Époque complement medals from the eras of Louis XIV and XV, Napoleon, and the Risorgimento. Highlights of the collection are Italian medals from the 17th century and later--periods that until recently have received little scholarly attention.
Hidden Faces: Covered Portraits of the Renaissance
Many small Renaissance portraits were richly adorned with covers or backs bearing allegorical figures, mythological scenes, or emblems that celebrated the sitter and invited the viewer to decipher their meaning. Hidden Faces includes seventy objects, ranging in format from covered paintings to miniature boxes, that illuminate the symbiotic relationship between the portrait and its pair. Texts by thirteen distinguished scholars vividly illustrate that the other “faces” of these portraits represent some of the most innovative images of the Renaissance, created by masters such as Hans Memling and Titian. Uniting works that have in some cases been separated for centuries, this fascinating volume shows how the multifaceted format unveiled the sitter’s identity, both by physically revealing the portrait and reading the significance behind its cover.
The Silver Caesars
The twelve monumental silver-gilt standing cups known as the Aldobrandini Tazze constitute perhaps the most enigmatic masterpiece of Renaissance European metalwork. Topped with statuettes of the Twelve Caesars, the tazze are decorated with marvelously detailed scenes illustrating the lives of those ancient Roman rulers. The work’s origin is unknown, and the ensemble was divided in the nineteenth century and widely dispersed, greatly hampering study. This volume, inspired by a groundbreaking symposium at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, examines topics ranging from the tazze’s representation of the ancient world to their fate in the hands of nineteenth-century collectors, and presents newly discovered archival material and advanced scientific findings. The distinguished essayists propose answers to critical questions that have long surrounded the set and shed light on the stature of Renaissance goldsmiths’ work as an art form, establishing a new standard for the study of Renaissance silver.
Language, Migration and Multilingualism in the Age of Digital Humanities
Located at the intersection of humanities and applied informatics, the fledgling discipline of Digital Humanities is bringing new impulses to the field of (Romance) linguistics. Those are especially productive in the context of migration and heteroglossic practices, which encounter constraining language ideologies in Western societies.
