Inspiration is the initial spark that puts us on track towards our beliefs, attitudes, and actions. It partly defines who we are and whom we will become. But what are the sources of our inspirations, what governs them, how do they take shape in our lives and how are our lives shaped by them? Can they be right and wrong, and do we have the power to control them? This book provides an analysis of the historical, geographical, and cultural aspects of those countless moments that ignite our passions, guide our efforts, or cause the lack of both. Through the study of human inspirations, the author elaborates a variety of issues, including current societal, political, and global challenges, spirit...

Untimely Sacrifices questions why individuals may give their time and energy to the collective against their own self-interest. Turning to Finland where public health officials named occupational burnout as a "new hazard" of the new economy, Daena Funahashi asks: What moves people to work to the point of pathological stress? Contrary to health experts who highlight the importance of self-management and energetic conservation, Funahashi questions the very economic premise of cognitive psychology that one could "economize" one's energy and thus save oneself. By pitting anthropological takes on sacrifice next to the clinical discourses on pressure, work, and coping, Funahashi offers ways to rethink what drives stress. Untimely Sacrifices also provides a compelling critique of state welfare and political economy, contesting the tendency to treat the gift economy as something separate from the force that makes redistributive mechanisms of state welfare work. It is a book essential to those interested in how forces unassimilable to conventional economy come to matter in issues of labor, stress, and welfare.

In recent years research into suicide has grown and significant advances have been made in clarifying the phenomenological and clinical profile of the potential suicide victim, as well as in identifying some of the biological, psychological and sociological risk factors for self-destructive behavior. The knowledge so far collated, has shed light on many aspects of suicidal behavior and provides a sound ground in answering the question, What leaves a person with no other choice but to terminate his life?Obviously, suicide represents a complex and multi-factorial human behavior and as such, raises a variety of theoretical, clinical, ethical and legal issues, which can only be successfully addressed by concerted multi-disciplinary research efforts. The presentation in a book of such a multi-faceted, multi-dimensional, age-long human enigma is a difficult task and a stimulating challenge. This book is based on a selection of papers presented
In this book, Johns Hopkins psychiatrist Phillip R. Slavney, M.D., offers a concise guide that will help primary-care physicians evaluate and treat patients who are delirious, demoralized, thinking of suicide, or refusing to follow medical advice. Although these patients exhibit emotional distress, cognitive disturbance, or maladaptive behavior, the cause of the problem is often their medical illness and treatment. For that reason, many such patients can receive excellent care from their own physicians—physicians who, given the resistance of managed care companies to specialist referrals, must now bear that responsibility in any event. After an introductory chapter on clinical assessment, ...
