A presentation of a collection of poems, coupled with artistic photographs, produced by a brilliant Zanzibar-born artist, photographer, author and theatrical producer, Issak Esmail Issak. What started as individual Friday greetings to close friends and family, later became a treasure trove that had to be shared widely—hence this selected collection. Each photograph is a subtle, yet very eloquent, portrayal of the intricate cosmopolitan life in Zanzibar. Although each individual photograph already speaks volumes, the poem, alongside each, serves as a colorful embellishment. It is hoped that the reader will take the time to scrutinize each entry to try to read, understand and savor the creat...
Ajit Singh, a Zanzibar architect who also was a painter, a man of the arts, whose signature is on many an edifice in Zanzibar, remains fairly unknown, little mentioned. Not even a street or building has officially been dedicated to his name. This book is a humble effort to make up for the lack of appreciation, a complimentary summary perhaps, to fill the information gap on his life and legacy. Hopefully it would spotlight his great dedication to and love for his adopted country Zanzibar. - Issak Esmail Issak

Reel Pleasures brings the world of African moviehouses and the publics they engendered to life, revealing how local fans creatively reworked global media—from Indian melodrama to Italian westerns, kung fu, and blaxploitation films—to speak to local dreams and desires. In it, Laura Fair zeroes in on Tanzanians’ extraordinarily dynamic media cultures to demonstrate how the public and private worlds of film reception brought communities together and contributed to the construction of genders, generations, and urban citizenship over time. Radically reframing the literatures on media exhibition, distribution, and reception, Reel Pleasures demonstrates how local entrepreneurs and fans worked together to forge the most successful cinema industry in colonial sub-Saharan Africa. The result is a major contribution to the literature on transnational commodity cultures.
This volume examines Western India’s contributions to the spread of ideas, beliefs and other intangible ties across the Indian Ocean world. The region, particularly Gujarat and Bombay, is well-established in the Indian imaginary and in scholarship as a mercantile hub. These essays move beyond this identity to examine the region as a dynamic place of learning and a host of knowledge, tracing the flow of knowledge, aesthetic sensibilities, values, memories and genetic programs. Contributors traverse the fields of history, anthropology, agriculture, botany, medicine, sociology and more to offer path-breaking perspectives on Western India’s deep socio-cultural impact across the centuries. Western India emerges as a pivotal region in the maritime world as a transmitter of knowledge.
