Four unique pan-European CORINE Land Cover datasets—CLC1990, CLC2000, CLC2006, and CLC2012— and three datasets concerning changes between 1990 and 2012 have presented the first-ever opportunity to observe the European landscape by means of land cover and its change. Transactional Environmental Support System Design: Global Solutions
Designing a Transactional Environmental Support System grew from the desire to allow citizens to exchange knowledge on local land and animals for the purpose of learning how to increase their sustainability in regards to biodiversity and livelihood. Transactional Environmental Support System Design: Global Solutions details the results of this project ranging from studies done in small, local communities to those done in much larger national settings. Survey results of government practices, availability of decision support software, and community responses to data recording are all highlighted in this emerging research. Additionally, the book goes on to emphasize the increasing potential for environmental decision support while directly addressing some of the challenges that must be overcome.
Applications of key biodiversity areas
A large number of approaches have been developed over the last four decades for identifying places of significance for biodiversity, but unfortunately this requires looking at multiple, disconnected databases and other information sources to understand the sites of importance in a particular area. To address this issue and provide a coherent, global approach, IUCN was asked to convene a worldwide consultative process to agree on an overarching methodology to identify Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) -- sites that contribute significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity. A Joint Task Force on Biodiversity and Protected Areas was established to finalise a standard methodology for KBA identification. This report summarises findings from a two-year survey of existing and potential end-users of the KBA standard and, in particular, of the resulting KBA data generated under it. Implications for the development of the KBA standard are then outlined.
Balancing the Future of Europe's Coasts
This report has three elements. Firstly, it gives a snapshot of the current state of Europe's coastal regions. Secondly, it assesses the policies used to manage coastal regions, and discusses the proposal for a new European directive to improve the management of coastal regions. Towards an Urban Atlas
This reports considers the preliminary results of the Murbandy/Moland research project (Monitoring Urban Dynamics/Monitoring Land Use Changes) which seeks to measure and assess the characteristics and dynamics of urban growth and land use changes, such as transport and energy infrastructures. Based upon the creation of land use databases for 25 cities and urban areas within Europe, the project results show the spatial evolution of these areas with the aim of proposing a methodology for strategic monitoring of the impact of urban development on the environment.

Despite political commitment, Europe is struggling to halt the loss of biodiversity by 2010. Forests, as the hosts of much of the biological diversity in Europe, are vital to this debate. Any initiative designed to halt the biodiversity loss in Europe must take forests into account.
