Autonomy & Paternalism

Autonomy & Paternalism

In recent years, the triumph of autonomy has made paternalist interventions increasingly problematic. The value of a patient's right to self-determination and the practice of informed consent are considered supremely important in present-day health care ethics. In general, the idea of 'doctor knows best' has become more and more suspicious. This has left us with a situation in which paternalist medicine seems difficult to reconcile with respect for patient autonomy. This book offers a thorough reflection on the relationship between autonomy and paternalism, and argues that, from both theoretical and practical angles, the tension between these concepts is not as acute as it might seem. In lon...

Renewable Polymers

Presents the synthesis, technology and processing details of a large range of polymers derived from renewable resources It has been a long-term desire to replace polymers from fossil fuels with the more environmentally friendly polymers generated from renewable resources. Now, with the recent advancements in synthesis technologies and the finding of new functional monomers, research in this field has shown strong potential in generating better property polymers from renewable resources. A text describing these advances in synthesis, processing, and technology of such polymers not only provides the state-of-the-art information to researchers, but also acts to stimulate research in this direct...

Perspectives in Quantum Chemistry

The Sixth International Congress on Quantum Chemistry convened at the Campus of the Hebrew University. Jerusalem. Israel. on August 22-25. 1988. The International Congresses on Quantum Chemistry are held under the auspices of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science. Previous International Congresses on Quantum Chemistry were held in France. Japan, the United States, Sweden and Canada. These prestigious meetings provided a central contribution to the important modern area of theoretical chemistry. The major goals of the Sixth International Congress on Quantum Chemistry were: A) To provide an overview of recent novel developments. advances and directions of research in the broad...

Chemical Reactivity in Liquids

Understanding chemical reactivity has been the permanent concern of chemists from time immemorial. If we were able to understand it and express it quantitatively there would practically remain no unsolved mystery, and reactions would be fully predictable, with their products and rates and even side reactions. The beautiful developments of thermodynamics through the 19th century supplied us with the knowledge of the way a reactions progresses, and the statistical view initiated by Gibbs has progressively led to an unders tanding closer to the microscopic phenomena. But is was always evident to all that these advances still left our understanding of chemical reactivity far behind our empirical...

Class 5: Isomerases

The Springer Handbook of Enzymes provides concise data on some 5,000 enzymes sufficiently well characterized – and here is the second, updated edition. Their application in analytical, synthetic and biotechnology processes as well as in food industry, and for medicinal treatments is added. Data sheets are arranged in their EC-Number sequence. The new edition reflects considerable progress in enzymology: the total material has more than doubled, and the complete 2nd edition consists of 39 volumes plus Synonym Index. Starting in 2009, all newly classified enzymes are treated in Supplement Volumes.

The Carbohydrate Bioengineering Meeting held in Elsinore, Denmark, April 23-26, 1995, gathered 230 scientists, mostly from Europe, with interest in carbohydrate analysis and structure; carbohydrates in medicine and glycopathology; structure, function, application, and protein engineering of carbohydrate active enzymes; oligo- and polysaccharides of industrial interest; and production of carbohydrate containing new materials. The first chapters address glycoconjugates as modulatory and recognition molecules, structure determination using NMR and mass spectrometry, and microdialysis-chip enzyme-based sensors. Active site mutations coupled with crystal structures and synthetic substrate analogue interactions as well as new three-dimensional structures and binding domains for biotechnological applications are included in the chapters. Carbohydrate active enzymes turned out to be a predominant topic. The rapid development in glycobiology and glycotechnology has resulted in an enormous increase in our knowledge on the structure conversion, and application of carbohydrates in industry and medicine.

Reviews in Computational Chemistry

THIS VOLUME, WHICH IS DESIGNED FOR STAND-ALONE USE IN TEACHING AND RESEARCH, FOCUSES ON QUANTUM CHEMISTRY, AN AREA OF SCIENCE THAT MANY CONSIDER TO BE THE CENTRAL CORE OF COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY. TUTORIALS AND REVIEWS COVER * HOW TO OBTAIN SIMPLE CHEMICAL INSIGHT AND CONCEPTS FROM DENSITY FUNCTIONAL THEORY CALCULATIONS, * HOW TO MODEL PHOTOCHEMICAL REACTIONS AND EXCITED STATES, AND * HOW TO COMPUTE ENTHALPIES OF FORMATION OF MOLECULES. * A FOURTH CHAPTER TRACES CANADIAN RESEARCH IN THE EVOLUTION OF COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTRY. * ALSO INCLUDED WITH THIS VOLUME IS A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO QCPE. FROM REVIEWS OF THE SERIES "Reviews in Computational Chemistry proves itself an invaluable resource to the computational chemist. This series has a place in every computational chemist's library."-JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY
