Afro-Christianity at the Grassroots
The spontaneous and rapid growth of indigenous African Christianity, especially in South Africa, has undermined the appropriateness of the term "mainline" for the traditional, denominational churches in the area. Some of these churches lost more than twenty-five percent of their membership in the period 1980-1990, while membership of the indigenous churches increased by a similar percentage in the same period. The contributions to this volume are based on grassroots research and each one treats some significant aspect within the life and work of this vast, self-motivating movement, a movement largely ignored for over a century by western-oriented Christianity. The work of these researchers clearly indicates how it is that African Indigenous Churches, with their holistic approach to religion - a feature of traditional African religion - serve as such a dynamic vehicle in effectively addressing the needs of their flocks. A further focus of the essays is on issues faced by these churches within their own church context.
Victory Over Fear: Charms, Witchcraft and Worldview in South-Central Malawi
This volume is about effective discipleship. The author discusses how it is possible to transform worldview and thus change behaviour (practice) in the area of African traditional religious charm- dependency and related witchcraft practices in the church. He lays foundations for an appropriate approach for renewal, one which takes into consideration cultural sensitivity, Biblical fidelity and pedagogic efficacy. Specific Biblical passages are studied with a view to both theological significance and practically applicable significance for the context, and suggestions are made regarding how to best communicate these Biblical truths effectively in situ. This material provides a malleable resource for church leaders, theological educators and missionaries, to use, develop or modify, according to their own particular didactic needs and specific ATR challenges to Christian discipleship.
Conflicted Power in Malawian Christianity
The volume constitutes Klaus Fiedler's crowning contribution to scholarship. Essays in the first half of the book focus on Malawian Christianity and how contrasting Powers, Gospel and Secular, engage each other, creating social, political and cultural conflict in the process. In the second half, Fiedler examines general missiological themes. These essays provide a broader missiological background, offering a theoretical framework necessary for appreciating the essays in the first half. He concludes with a chapter that reviews selected seminal books on themes under study. Throughout the volume Fiedler applies the "restorationist revival theory" he constructed in The Story of Faith Missions, an earlier 1994 work putting emphasis on non classical missions and churches, not systematically covered in earlier scholarship. This volume, the first of its kind on Malawian Christianity, will long remain an indispensable text for those interested in Missiology and Malawian Christianity.

Wisdom of the Yawo People is a collection of traditional proverbs and stories from the Yawo people of South Eastern Africa. The literature contains deep wisdom rooted in African soil, which will be applicable to people everywhere. The proverbs are told in both the Yawo language and English and reveal the end result of greed, laziness and pride. They also promote the value of welcoming strangers, belonging and being respectful. Each proverb and story is accompanied by a short interpretation, and illustration.
Oral Literature and Moral Education among the Lakeside Tonga of Northern Malawi
This is a book about the Tonga of Northern Malawi, sometimes called the Lakeshore Tonga to distinguish them from other ethnic groups with the same name further west in Central Africa. The Lakeshore Tonga were the first ethnic group to identify themselves with the Christian faith. The purpose of the research was to investigate the use of Tonga myths, folktales, proverbs and rituals for their role in Moral Education and assess and evaluate their contribution towards value formation for the youth. Each chapter in the book aims to discuss some ideas in the anthropology of religion and to illustrate them with specific case studies formed primarily through conversation with friends, both young and old, over some years.

Politics and Christianity in Malawi, 1875-1940
First published in 1977 and now in its third edition, this book has been recognised as one of the most successful studies to be made of the impact of a Christian mission in Africa. Starting with a survey of the economy and society of Malawi in the mid ninetieth century, the book goes on to examine the home background to the Livingstonia Mission of the Free Church of Scotland and the influence of David Livingstone upon it. It then describes the failure of 'commerce and Christianity' around the south end of Lake Malawi and the subsequent positive response which the mission evoked among the people of Northern Malawi. African responses and the relationship between Christianity and politics dominate the second half of the book. Comprehensive reassessments are made of the origins of the Watch Tower movement; the growth of Christian independence and the character of interpolitical associations. This revised edition includes a new introduction, and up-dated bibliography, and some revised text.
Women, Presbyterianism and Patriarchy
This is the first book by a Malawian woman theologian. First released in 1997 it won an honorable mention in the Noma Award for Publishing in Africa in 1998 and is now updated here with a new introduction by the author. The study traces the struggles and contribution of Chewa women to the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian. Amongst the topics are female mediumships in traditional religion, post-missionary developments in Chigwirizano, womens attempts to achieve some public manifestation of their personal relatioship to God in open ministry, and the current women's organisation in Nkhoma Synod. Dr. Isabel Apawo Phiri is in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Malawi.

Kenneth R. Ross is Professor of Theology and Dean of Postgraduate Studies at Zomba Theological University. He is also Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria, Honorary Fellow at the Edinburgh University School of Divinity, Senior Research Associate at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Boston, USA, Series Editor of the Edinburgh Companions to Global Christianity (Edinburgh University Press), and Associate Minister at Bernvu CCAP. He is the author of many books and articles on World Christianity, including the forthcoming co-authored volume Hope in Times of Crisis: Reimagining Ecumenical Mission. He has been researching and writing about Malawi church history and theology since he first arrived in Zomba in 1988.
