Goodwin Wharton

Goodwin Wharton is the story of a quest - the attempt of a seventeenth-century aristocrat to transmute arcane knowledge into wealth, power, and salvation. Its protagonist, Goodwin Wharton (1653-1704), attempting to recoup his losses in engineering, deep-sea diving, and alchemy, formed an allianced with Mary Tomson Boucher Lawrence Parish - spiritualist, physician, biologist, and uniquely gifted confidence woman. Together, with occasional help from three MPs, they sought for spirit-guarded treasures, entrance to the lowland kingdom of the fairies, success in alchemy, and angelic guidance for diving expeditions. Meanwhile, Mary became Goodwin's mistress, and Goodwin acquired great spiritual gifts - visions, audible revelations, ordinations, an infallible inner voice - and the love of three queens of England. -- Book Jacket.

*THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER* *A Financial Times 2023 book to watch* 'Forceful ... The fundamental thrust of Goodwin's argument is right ... a new centre ground of British politics is being formed - even if both parties have yet to fully comprehend it' The Times What has caused the recent seismic changes in British politics, including Brexit and a series of populist revolts against the elite? Why did so many people want to overturn the status quo? Where have the Left gone wrong? And what deeper trends are driving these changes? British politics is coming apart. A country once known for its stability has recently experienced a series of shocking upheavals. Matthew Goodwin, acclaimed political scientist and co-author of National Populism, shows that the reason is not economic hardship, personalities or dark money. It is a far wider political realignment that will be with us for years to come. An increasingly liberalised, globalised ruling class has lost touch with millions, who found their values ignored, their voices unheard and their virtue denied. Now, this new alliance of voters is set to determine Britain's fate.

The Gatherer

When my mother and stepfather signed me up to join the army at the age of seventeen, I don't really remember my reaction. I do remember that I had no idea what the army was. I had never been more than ten miles up or down the road, and that was mostly from riding the school bus. My life at that time consisted of books. If the paper had words on it, then it was in my hands. I loved stories. I loved the way the story would allow me to feel the emotion of the experience coming off the paper. For example, my seven-year-old nephew asked me one day, "Do you want to see my imagination?" I instantly said, "Yes, yes I would." Through the years, the army provided the opportunity to experience different cultures and meet some amazing people. I invite you to turn the page, and as you read, use your imagination to see and feel my experiences, starting with my second deployment to Iraq.

Winner of the Political Book of the Year Award 2015 The UK Independence Party (UKIP) is the most significant new party in British politics for a generation. In recent years UKIP and their charismatic leader Nigel Farage have captivated British politics, media and voters. Yet both the party and the roots of its support remain poorly understood. Where has this political revolt come from? Who is supporting them, and why? How are UKIP attempting to win over voters? And how far can their insurgency against the main parties go? Drawing on a wealth of new data – from surveys of UKIP voters to extensive interviews with party insiders – in this book prominent political scientists Robert Ford and Matthew Goodwin put UKIP's revolt under the microscope and show how many conventional wisdoms about the party and the radical right are wrong. Along the way they provide unprecedented insight into this new revolt, and deliver some crucial messages for those with an interest in the state of British politics, the radical right in Europe and political behaviour more generally.
