Intelligent Techniques and Tools for Novel System Architectures

This volume presents new directions and solutions in broadly perceived intelligent systems. An urgent need this volume has occurred as a result of vivid discussions and presentations at the "IEEE-IS’ 2006 – The 2006 Third International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Systems" held in London, UK, September, 2006. This book is a compilation of many valuable inspiring works written by both the conference participants and some other experts in this new and challenging field.

Search engines, with Google at the top, have become the most heavily used online service, with millions of searches performed every day and many remarkable capabilities. Soft Computing for Information Processing and Analysis includes reports from the front of soft computing in the internet industry and imparts knowledge and understanding of the significance of the field's accomplishments, new developments and future directions. This carefully edited book has evolved from presentations made by the participants of a meeting entitled "Fuzzy Logic and the Internet: Enhancing the Power of the Internet", organized by the Berkeley Initiative in Soft Computing (BISC), University of California, Berkeley. It addresses the important topics of modern search engines such as fuzzy query, decision analysis and support systems, including articles about topics such as Web Intelligence, World Knowledge and Fuzzy Logic (by Lotfi A. Zadeh), perception based information processing, or web intelligence.

Fuzzy Logic and Soft Computing

Fuzzy Logic and Soft Computing contains contributions from world-leading experts from both the academic and industrial communities. The first part of the volume consists of invited papers by international authors describing possibilistic logic in decision analysis, fuzzy dynamic programming in optimization, linguistic modifiers for word computation, and theoretical treatments and applications of fuzzy reasoning. The second part is composed of eleven contributions from Chinese authors focusing on some of the key issues in the fields: stable adaptive fuzzy control systems, partial evaluations and fuzzy reasoning, fuzzy wavelet neural networks, analysis and applications of genetic algorithms, p...

The concept of fuzziness, inspired by Zadeh (1965), brings us fruitful results when it is applied to problems in decision making. Recently, problems in fuzzy decision making are getting more complex, and one of the most complex fac tors is dynamics in systems. Dynamical approach to fuzzy decision making has been proposed by Bellman and Zadeh's celebrated paper "Decision-making in a fuzzy environment" (1970). The idea has developed into fuzzy mathemati cal programming and has been applied in many fields including management science, operations research, control theory, engineering, systems analysis, computer science, mathematical finance etc. Dynamic programming, advo cated in Bellmans book "...

Decision making is an omnipresent, most crucial activity of the human being, and also of virtually all artificial broadly perceived “intelligent” systems that try to mimic human behavior, reasoning and choice processes. It is quite obvious that such a relevance of decision making had triggered vast research effort on its very essence, and attempts to develop tools and techniques which would make it possible to somehow mimic human decision making related acts, even to automate decision making processes that had been so far reserved for the human beings. The roots of those attempts at a scientific analysis can be traced to the ancient times but – clearly – they have gained momentum in ...

Modeling Decisions for Artificial Intelligence

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second International Conference on Modeling Decisions for Artificial Intelligence, MDAI 2005, held in Tsukuba, Japan in July 2005. The 40 revised full papers presented together with an introduction by the editors and 4 invited lectures were thoroughly reviewed and selected from 118 submissions. The papers are devoted to theory and tools for modeling decisions, as well as applications that encompass decision making processes and information fusion techniques. Special focus is given to applications related with risk, security and safety.

Computational Intelligence, Theory and Applications

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th Dortmund Fuzzy Days, Dortmund, Germany, 2006. This conference has established itself as an international forum for the discussion of new results in the field of Computational Intelligence. The papers presented here, all thoroughly reviewed, are devoted to foundational and practical issues in fuzzy systems, neural networks, evolutionary algorithms, and machine learning and thus cover the whole range of computational intelligence.

These two volumes consisting of Foundations and Applications provide the current status of theoretical and empirical developments in "computing with words". In philosophy, the twentieth century is said to be the century of language. This is mainly due to Wittgenstein who said: "The meaning of a word is its use in the language game". "The concept game is a concept with blurred edges". In the first phrase, "the language game" implies the everyday human activity with language, and in the latter, "game" simply implies an ordinary word. Thus, Wittgenstein precisely stated that a word is fuzzy in real life. Unfortunately this idea about a word was not accepted in the conventional science. We had to wait for Zadeh's fuzzy sets theory. Remembering Wittgenstein's statement, we should consider, on the one hand, the concept of "computing with words" from a philosophical point of view. It deeply relates to the everyday use of a word in which the meaning of a word is fuzzy in its nature.
