Celtic Knots Exploring outlines the matrix theory of J.Romilly Allen which explains how medieval artists created knotwork with cords alternating over and under at successive intersections. The book gives an approach useful in the study of Celtic knots. Original designs are sketched in black and white graphics. Working from the sketch, each closed line within the design is traced in a different color. Finally, a matrix or plaitwork is reconstructed from the interlace pattern. The construction method is applied to the designs on early Christian stone monuments from Wales, England, and Scotland.
