Biodeterioration Research 1

Man-made textile fibers are frequently encountered as trace evidence in criminal investigations. This study examined the effects of burial in soil on the biodeterioration of synthetic textile fibers such as cellulose acetate, nylon, polyesters and acrylics. Cellulose acetate fibers began to show signs of decomposition within two months after burial in common garden topsoil and were completely degraded within four to nine months. It was found that severely decomposed cellulose acetate fibers could be identified by pyrolysis-gas liquid chromatography even when other methods such as polarized light microscopy and dispersion staining failed. The solubility behavior of the cellulose acetate fiber...

Crystalline solids with highly structured micro-scale pores are called zeolites. Their well-defined structure and large contact surface make them extremely useful as catalysts. Their most common use is in washing powders. Different features are caused by the shape and size of the pores and the presence of different metals in the crystal structure. Research is conducted both towards better understanding of the relations between form and function and towards identifying new possible uses. This title presents a collection of contributions from internationally renowned researchers in the field of the Science and Technology of micro and mesoporous materials. The aim of the conference is to create an international forum where researchers from academia as well as from industry can discuss ideas and evaluate the impact of zeolites, and other porous materials, on new technologies at the beginning of the new millennium.·Gives the most recent developments in the origin, synthesis and characterisation of zeolitic materials·Outlines the impact and application of zeolites in various industrial processes·An adjourned state of art in the field of zeolites and other porous materials

Diseases and Conditions of Vegetables in Georgia

This handy pocket guide gives you information and photographs for on-the-spot identification of diseases and growth problems afflicting seventeen common vegetables grown in Georgia. More than seventy vegetable ailments are described and illustrated, including various rots, blights, wilts, mildews, viruses, and rusts. The descriptions also include information on the source of the ailment, which ranges from insect infestation to adverse climate and soil conditions to the misuse of insecticides. Two indexes are included, one organized by vegetable name and one by disease and condition. Rather than a traditional binding, the guide is drilled and bound in the upper corner, allowing flash-card-like pages to be fanned out and held next to affected vegetables for easier comparison and diagnosis. Popular with Cooperative Extension agents, this guide will also find wide use by farmers and gardeners, insurance adjusters, and suppliers of seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. Covers these vegetables: Cabbage Cantaloupe Carrot Collards Corn Cucumber Eggplant Lima Bean Mustard Onion Pepper Pumpkin Snap Bean Squash Tomato Turnip Watermelon
