In 1983, the book ``Experimental Plant Morphology'' was written in Czech by the above named authors. Widespread interest in the publication outside Czechoslovakia encouraged the authors to prepare this new English edition, ``Experimental Morphogenesis and Integration of Plants''. It is more than a mere translation of the original: the contents have been extended and further aspects of structural integrity and regulation in plants have been included, especially on the molecular, cellular and tissue level. The overall concept of the book is new and has been supplemented with the latest information on the subject. It aims to inform the scientific public, of current studies on morphogenesis and structural integration in plants. In addition, this book will show the possible way of regulating morphogenesis and structural integrity in plants with regard to the practical needs of agriculture, horticulture and silviculture.

The book summarizes present scientific knowledge in plant physiology with regards to plant production. The authors, mainly professors of plant physiology at agricultural universities in Czechoslovakia, present the individual fields of plant physiology with regard to the demands of agricultural practice and education of students and doctorani at these universities. The first chapters discuss metabolism ie. photosynthesis, respiration, mineral and heterotrophic nutrition, and water regime of plants. What follows is a discussion of the physiology of plant growth, development and movements, and finally resistance of plants against unfavourable abiotic and biotic effects. The book shows how to in...

Focusing exclusively on postharvest vegetable studies, this book covers advances in biochemistry, plant physiology, and molecular physiology to maximize vegetable quality. The book reviews the principles of harvest and storage; factors affecting postharvest physiology, calcium nutrition and irrigation control; product quality changes during handling and storage; technologies to improve quality; spoilage factors and biocontrol methods; and storage characteristics of produce by category. It covers changes in sensory quality such as color, texture, and flavor after harvest and how biotechnology is being used to improve postharvest quality.

Organometallic Compounds and Living Organisms provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of organometallic compounds and living organisms. This book discusses the biological effects of organometallic compounds. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the recognition of methylmercuric compounds as the causative agents of Minamata disease, which has generated intensive research of their toxic effects. This text then examines the number of investigative applications of the biological inertness of silicones. Other chapters consider the capacity of many organometals to deactivate enzymes, which makes these compounds very useful for studying the nature of the enzyme active site. This book discusses as well the use and preparation of organometallurium compounds as imaging agents. The final chapter deals with the formation and cleavage of metal(loid)–carbon bonds, which play significant roles in the environmental transformation and circulation of metal(loids). This book is a valuable resource for chemists.

A Systems Perspective of Public Health

This unique book will open the reader’s eyes to otherwise invisible relationships in public health systems, taking them all the way from the basics of a systems approach to complex structures. Not only will the reader learn how to use computer models to unravel the mysteries of government health policy, demography, or epidemiology, but the book also teaches how to build models to solve any problem of a complex nature. It covers selected problems in detail from topics, such as epidemiology, pharmaceutical business, government regulatory policy, health care provider staffing, capacity planning, vaccination, and national health policy.

Hormonal Regulation of Plant Growth and Development

Plant hormone research is the favorite topic of physiologists. Past three decades have witnessed that this subject has received much attention. The inquisitive nature of human mind has pumped much in literature on this subject and this volume is the product of such minds. In the following pages various hormonal-controlled physiological processes like, flowering, seed dormancy and germination, enzyme secretion, senes cence, ion transport, fruit ripening, root growth and development, thig momorphogenesis and tendril thigmonasty have been included. The volume also contains a review paper on 'Growth Regulating Activity of Penicillin in Higher Plants' and has been presented for the first time. Th...
