(Non)referentiality in Conversation
Although there is a large literature on referentiality, going back to at least the nineteenth and early twentieth century, much of this early work is based on constructed data and most of it is on English. The chapters in this volume contribute to a growing body of work that examines referentiality through naturalistic data in context. 1938. Hitler's expansionist policies are arousing both anger and admiration, not least in Helsinki's Wednesday Club. The members of this relaxed gentleman's club are old friends of lawyer Claes Thune. But this year it is apparent that the political unrest in Europe is having an effect on the cohesion of the group. Kivijärven kirkkoherra Frans Petter Krank oli tunnettu pappi ja virsisäveltäjä. Hänen puolisonsa ja serkkunsa Maria Elisabet Krank (s. Durchman) oli kulttuurihistoriasta tunnetun Ruoveden kirkkoherra Josef Wilhelm Durchmanin tytär. Josef Wilhelm Durchman oli mm. Elias Lönnrotin työtoveri ja kulttuurisuvun kantaisä. Toiminta musiikin alalla tulee esille jo 1700-luvulla. Sukupiirin useat papit joutuvat kansasta nousevan herätyskristillisyyden vuoksi erotetuksi tai itse eroamaan viroistaan ja tuomituksi mm. Kalajoen käräjillä tai lestadiolaisuutta koskevien harhaoppisyytösten vuoksi. Vaikeudet näyttävät koituvan siunaukseksi erityisesti hengellisen musiikin luomisessa ja tallentamisessa. Sukupiirin elämää on leimannut voimakas aatteellisuus: suomalaisuusaate, kristillisisänmaallinen henki ja kansan vähäosaisten auttaminen.
