Jakob Glatz war zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts als Jugendbuchautor bekannt und geschätzt. Erziehungs- und Bildungsfragen waren im Österreich des ausgehenden 18. Jahrhunderts in festen kirchlichen katholischen Händen. Angesichts von Glatz' religiöser Zugehörigkeit – er war lutherischer Protestant – sind sein Erfolg und seine Wirkung bemerkenswert.Lange haben Glatz' Bücher verborgen in Bibliotheken und in Privatsammlungen geruht. Sie waren ein Schatz für Liebhaber von älterer Kinder- und Jugendliteratur. Neuerdings sind sie es auch für die Forschung. Bei der Beschäftigung mit Glatz muss man sich mit seinen verschiedenen Seiten auseinandersetzen: Er war längere Zeit am Salzmann'schen Philanthropin in Schnepfenthal tätig und als Konsistorialrat maßgeblich am organisatorischen Aufbau der entstehenden evangelischen Kirche beteiligt. Die Verbindungen und Wechselwirkungen zwischen dem Glatz, der philanthropisches Gedankengut nach Wien mitgebracht hat, und dem erfolgreichen Kinder- und Jugendbuchautor werden im vorliegenden Band beleuchtet.
