Persistent communication difficulties in school-aged children are frequently accompanied by psychosocial problems, such as low self-esteem and poor self-image, which can hamper further progress. The longer the difficulties persist, the longer help is required, the more the child?s schooling is disrupted for clinical appointments and the more likely the child is to be victimised and stigmatised by peers for appearing "different" to them. A vicious circle can ensue, which not only contributes to the child's cycle of disadvantage, but also to continuing costs to health, education and the social services. As part of the pre-registration education for students who intend to enter health care work, periods of work experience are bullt into the curriculum. Students are placed in work settings, generally termed clinical settings, for specified periods, ranging from single days to extended periods of time. Ouring these placements the students are 'supervised' by qualified staff whose first responsibility is to the care of patients. Turbulent Sounds
No sound class requires so much basic knowledge of phonology, acoustics, aerodynamics, and speech production as obstruents (turbulent sounds) do. This book is intended to bridge a gap by introducing the reader to the world of obstruents from a multidisciplinary perspective. It starts with a review of typological processes, continues with various contributions to the phonetics-phonology interface, explains the realization of specific turbulent sounds in endangered languages, and finishes with surveys of obstruents from a sociophonetic, physical and pathological perspective.
