A Metaphysical Handbook for the Sublime Oddity of Creation
The Robert Lehman Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art houses one of the finest collections of frames in the world. The collection Robert Lehman bequeathed to the Museum includes nearly 400 frames, most of them Italian and French and dating from the 14th to the 18th century. Although he bought most of these frames to display his paintings and drawings, a number of them were acquired as works of art in their own right. Using the documentary evidence that survives, this volume attempts to place these frames on the pictures and in the interiors for which they were intended. For each frame, the author has provided a profile drawing that is a key to its design, origin, date, and application. This volume is the 13th in a series of 16 on the Robert Lehman Collection. -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.
For more than a century, people have been drawn to sites of tragedy involving the rich, beautiful and notorious of Hollywood. Tourists at the center of the movie universe flock to Rudolph Valentino's grave, the house where Marilyn Monroe died, the "O.J. murders" condo, the hotel where John Belushi overdosed, a myriad of haunted mansions. In its extensively researched and enlarged second edition, this book tells the stories of these locations and makes finding them simple. Seventeen driving tours include more than 650 sites. Each tour covers a specific area, from Hollywood and the Sunset Strip to Brentwood and Malibu, covering the entire Los Angeles basin. Concise, easy-to-follow directions are given to each location with 145 photos and the fascinating story behind each stop.
Woman and Modernity provides what previous studies of Salomé have in large part neglected to offer—a sustained investigation of the literariness of Salomé's texts and of Salomé as a significant reader of modernity. Focusing on key encounters in Salomé's writings, such as her exchanges with Nietzsche, Ibsen, Rilke, Freud, and late nineteenth-century middle-class German feminists such as Dohm and Stucker, Martin approaches Salomé's life and work as a series of strategic negotiations concerning the place of women and the meaning of femininity.
