Cultural Encounters in Contemporary Spain

Previous critical studies have focused on feminist approaches to Janes's oeuvre. This study seeks to expand those discussions through an analysis of the aesthetics of cultural otherness (rather than simply gendered otherness) within Janes's prolific literary production.

From the Forbidden Garden

"This selection of thirty letters and two postcards, written between September 2, 1969, and September 12, 1972, includes most of Pizarnik's correspondence with Spanish writer-editor-artist Antonio Beneyto. From these informative letters we learn about her influences, the artists, poets, and writers she preferred, and her reactions to them. She collaborated on various projects and cultivated many literary and personal ties with writers of the stature of Julio Cortazar, Olga Orozco, Octavio Paz, Pieyre de Mandiargues, Silvina Ocampo, and Luisa Sofovich, among others." "Although the corpus of Pizarnik's writing available in English has expanded in the last twelve years, it is still far from adequate. This is the first time that a selection of letters from Alejandra Pizarnik to Antonio Beneyto has been published in English. The translators hope that this volume will serve English-speaking audiences as a new bridge to her work."--BOOK JACKET.

Còdols in New York

A flaneur is a a streetwise observer, a stroller, someone who rambles through a city without apparent purpose but feels tuned to the place and is constantly searching for adventure, aesthetic and erotic. In Codols in New York, the Spanish writer Antonio Beneyto has created a protagonist, a persona of Beneyto himself, with a perspective reminiscent of the fin-de-siecle viewpoint of Baudelaire's French dandy and the obsessed Breton's surrealist flaneur. A passionate observer, whose immense pleasure is to take up residence in multiplicity, Beneyto's flaneur feels at home in the crowd and finds himself at the center of everything in the city. His flaneur, like a rolling stone, enters into the mu...

Ticket to Ride

Carlota Caulfield's Ticket to Ride of is a collection of poems, essays and interviews. It is an autobiographical evocation of the author's family history, and a beautiful homage to her mother. Written over a period of years-from 1995 to 2005-these pieces make up a life as it is being lived and imagined. In them we find the poet's playful irony. Caulfield, like her beloved painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo, loves intellectual puzzles.
