Originally published in 1938. This compact treatise is a complete treatment of Aristotle’s logic as containing negative terms. It begins with defining Aristotelian logic as a subject-predicate logic confining itself to the four forms of categorical proposition known as the A, E, I and O forms. It assigns conventional meanings to these categorical forms such that subalternation holds. It continues to discuss the development of the logic since the time of its founder and address traditional logic as it existed in the twentieth century. The primary consideration of the book is the inclusion of negative terms - obversion, contraposition etc. – within traditional logic by addressing three questions, of systematization, the rules, and the interpretation.
Again and again he voyaged up and down the Mississippi River and the Atlantic seacoast with soldiers, traders, and hardy adventures; in New Orleans and Philadelphia tavern underlings came to know his thick-set, uniformed figure, always busy, always alert, and often sinister. He visited Havana on mysterious missions, ran the gauntlet of grasping customhouse officials at Vera Cruz, and dined with Mexican patriots in the "Halls of Montezumas." Whether enjoying the proceeds of government pay-checks honestly earned or silver pesos wheedled from gullible Spanish officials, he set the pattern for lavish spending and engaging hospitality. Affable and gregarious, he craved the applause of his fellow-men; for their women he had an ample store of hard-handed compliments. He altered his political creed to suit the exigencies of the moment, but was always the partisan, writing profusely and talking without end.
A profile of the Continental Army general explores his career with the Spanish secret service, his protection by four presidents in spite of his treasonous acts, and his role in foiling Aaron Burr's conspiracy to break up the Union.
