Jan Lievens (1607-1674), Rembrandt's boyhood friend, who embarked on an artistic career even earlier than his companion, once again is as highly regarded as during his lifetime, thanks to numerous recent publications and several exhibitions. The present monograph and catalogue raisonné discuss and analyze for the first time the extensive output of his early Leiden years: his paintings, drawings, and etchings from 1623 to 1632. Besides the book's comprehensiveness and consideration of the artist's work in the context of his Netherlandish contemporaries from Haarlem, Utrecht, and Antwerp, special emphasis is placed on establishing the chronology of his oeuvre. Only a solid foundation such as this would make it possible to determine more precisely than before Lievens's much discussed relationship to Rembrandt. What transpired was a most lively give and take between two young artists intensely searching for new ways of artistic expression whose later development after their respective move from Leiden took very different paths. Consequently, the careful examination of Lievens's early oeuvre sheds new light on Rembrandt's Leiden work.

Yours for Humanity

Pauline Elizabeth Hopkins (1859–1930), African American novelist, editor, journalist, playwright, historian, and public intellectual, used fiction to explore and intervene in the social, racial, and political challenges of her era. Her particular form of cultural activism was groundbreaking for its time and continues to influence and inspire authors and scholars today. This collection of essays constitutes a new phase in the full historical and literary recovery of her work. JoAnn Pavletich argues that considered from the broadest of perspectives, Hopkins’s life work occupies itself with the critique and creation of epistemologies that control racialized knowledge and experience. Whether...

After Those Fifty Years: Memoirs of the Birkenau Boys tells the stories of the approximately ninety teenage boys who were selected in July 1944 from the so-called "Family Camp" in Birkenau to work in Auschwitz, shortly before the murder of those remaining in the Family Camp. In the mid-1980's, the surviving "Birkenau Boys" began to correspond, reunite, and record their memories of their unusual common experience from nearly fifty years earlier. Originally published in paperback in 1992 and revised in 1998 and 2008, this digital edition includes the biographies of the Birkenau Boys (detailing prewar, wartime and postwar histories), reflections, photos, and illustrations as published in the second revised edition.

The theory of stochastic processes originally grew out of efforts to describe Brownian motion quantitatively. Today it provides a huge arsenal of methods suitable for analyzing the influence of noise on a wide range of systems. The credit for acquiring all the deep insights and powerful methods is due ma- ly to a handful of physicists and mathematicians: Einstein, Smoluchowski, Langevin, Wiener, Stratonovich, etc. Hence it is no surprise that until - cently the bulk of basic and applied stochastic research was devoted to purely mathematical and physical questions. However, in the last decade we have witnessed an enormous growth of results achieved in other sciences - especially chemistry and...
