本論集共收論文三十二篇，分音韻史和方言史兩個部分。音韻史部分收十篇論文，涉及上古音陰入對轉疏證、上古音歌部的輔音韻尾、顏師古《漢書注》中的「合韻音」等問題，中古音主要涉及《皇極經世解起數訣》與中古韻書《廣韻》、《集韻》比較研究、《皇極經世解起數訣》與早期韻圖《韻鏡》、《七音略》比較研究問題，近代音主要涉及南曲的用韻問題。方言史部分收二十二篇論文，主要研究近代閩方言的演變軌跡，涉及明清閩北、閩東方言音韻、清代閩南方言音韻、清末民初潮汕方言音韻、閩臺閩南方言韻書比較等問題，還涉及清代西方傳教士閩南方言文獻研究、現代閩南方言詞彙等問題。論集中的論文絕大多數已在重要學術刊物上發表，許多論文選題來源於國家社科基金項目、教育部項目，部分論文曾獲得教育部中國高校人文社科優秀成果獎和福建省社科優秀成果獎，具有創新性和開拓性。
